• The Last Of Us Was Originally A Jak & Daxter Reboot
Neil Druckmann has confirmed at his IGDA keynote that The Last of Us team – which were separate from the people making Uncharted – were originally working on a new Jak & Daxter title, rather than a brand new IP. “Our task was… and this is the first time we’re showing this, to reboot Jak & Daxter. And these are some of the concepts.”

“So we spent a lot of time exploring the world of Jak & Daxter,” Druckmann continues, before saying that they spent a lot of time exploring these concepts and this “fantastical world”. They soon found that their best ideas were getting away from Jak, and questioned whether that it was for marketing reasons that they were using the Jak & Daxter prefix. They felt as though they weren’t serving the fans, even if the redesigned Daxter “was pretty good looking” and essentially asked their boss whether they needed to do it. His answer was no, and that it would just be easier for them to start with something, but they could go ahead and do something else if they wanted. That led to The Last of Us, ideas of which had their roots back in 2004, and involved George Romero, the father of zombie films, who played Druckmann’s zombie game prototype, which formed the basis for The Last of Us once he revisited the characters later in a comic book.
http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/10/02/the-last-of-us-was-originally-a-jak-daxter-reboot/
As awesome as last of us was, I would have really loved to see a new Jak & Daxter game.
Mmm I really loved the Jak & Daxter series, but honestly The Last of Us was fucking incredible and I'm glad they made that over a new J&D. That said I still want another J&D game :P Though those are some, uh, interesting concept arts.. speaking as someone who hasn't played The Last of Us, I totally would have bought a Jak and Daxter reboot.
That's awesome how they realized their ideas for the game wasn't necessarily fitting for Jak & Daxter so instead of just using the name for gain a huge fan base they decided to go their own way.

Not B&K at all, but from what I've seen, a pretty decent game.
wow it's almost like that's the entire topic of the article
Someone needs a nap.
As much as I love The Last of Us, I would probably kill just to play this.

Either why, a Jak and Daxter reboot would be badass as fuck. Even as a study, the first few images are weird as fuck, and sort of creepy. If they were doing the concept arts for movements, then that'd be cool as fuck.
why not both

It's like what if they made Crash Bandicoot a weird realistic furry or some shit? I would rather see some sort of spiritual successor to Jack and Daxter, keep the realistic styling of the new naughty dog studios, but bring back some of that ps2 era platforming.
I would really like to see a new Jak & Daxter game though. The last one I played was 3, never got a chance to play the others. One of them was a racing game so I avoided it and the other was a psp title so I couldn't play it. Was there any others after that?
Not too surprising. ZombiU was originally a Raving Rabbids game for PS3/360.

You brainstorm a lot of ideas to see what works, keep the things you like, and trash the rest. So the final product would probably have been significantly less creepy looking.
Hopefully they come up with a new Jak game for the PS4.
I wouldn't mind a darker Jack and Daxter if given to the right hands to write the story. I mean the fans kinda deserve a proper new game after the abomination that was The Lost Frontier
Jak and Daxter are my absolute favorite platformers
I'd still love to see a reboot or something ;( was my 2nd fav childhood game along with ratchet and clank
Well, even if the game wasn't what it was originally intended to be, we have yet to see The Last of Jak and Daxter. Also, aside from PlayStation AllStars, have there been any crossovers between Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank? From an outsider perspective, they both seem kinda similar.
literally a red panda that would be hilarious to see act like his original self I'm reminded of the designs for the cat thing in Space Dandy now [t]http://i.imgur.com/7iQ12Z8.png[/t]
A jak and daxter with a realistic artform could be really cool.

It's always relieving to hear that people still remember Jak and Daxter. Also, they managed to sneak in a bit of Jak and Daxter in the Last of Us

That's really nice to hear. I like to think its a much better idea to start an original IP than to shoehorn ideas into an IP that they don't belong in. As stated before, Nut and Bolts is a great example of this. Also, constant reminders that I need to get a PS3. I've missed out on all this Naughty Dog action over the years.
There WAS a fifth game, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, but it was seriously under promoted. It wasn't very good anyways.
I remember watching the documentary that went over the development of The Last of Us, and one of main people on the dev team said that the reason why they failed to make a new Jak and Daxter game was that the art direction was strange as in they couldn't put Jak and Daxter in a realistic universe because it fails to match the original game's character. Kudos to them trying to make a realistic Jak and Daxter, but that is not what the series was about. I'm glad they didn't go through with it.
There WAS a fifth game, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, but it was seriously under promoted. It wasn't very good anyways.
Good thing it wasn't, because it was shit. It wasn't developed by Naughty Dog (which explains why it was so bad, but the Daxter game has immunity in this case as although it was developed by another group, it turned out to be a very good game.)
If the Jak and daxter game they originally planned had free roam like 2 and 3, it would be way better than the last of us. I thought the last of us was a great game, but it had no replay value whatsoever, and subpar multiplayer.
