So! We've all woken up today to discover that we have one fewer automotive brand to cover, because Toyota is killing Scion.
This isn't the death of the auto industry we're talking about here — it's been a while since Scion was selling in significant volumes, and I don't think anyone is shocked to see it go. But here's what I do take away from it: fun is dying.
That is not an exaggeration. Take it in. This is real. The transportation industry is turning into white bread before our very eyes.
Scion was originally rolled out in 2002 to get teens and twentysomethings into their first and second cars. And Toyota would tell you it was successful, because that's how spin works! "Scion achieved its goals of developing unique products and processes, and bringing in new, younger customers to Toyota," the company says. "Today's younger buyers still want fun-to-drive vehicles that look good, but they are also more practical."
RIP the ugliest cars of a generation.
The thing with Scions were that they looked fast and edgy and young but they were woefully underpowered and not exciting to drive. No wonder mostly old people bought them and they missed their target demographic completely.
What was the matter with just selling Toyota's as Toyota anyway?
They are at the Philly Car Show right now, and lmao nobody was over there
Solid marketing, butt awful amenities and shoebox design.
Or for the same price you could buy an entry Honda or ironically enough, an entry Toyota you could still be driving right now because it was actually built right, instead of corners cut.
They only had two fairly decent looking cars, everything else was an abomination.
I like boxy cars but those.....
That was a class of ugly I did not know existed.

This. I would rather see a FR-S model with a Toyota branding.
All I can think about when I hear the word Scion is the running joke of shilling Scion TC as much as possible in Frisky Dingo.
Scion iQ is actually a pretty cool car for city dwellers. It sure as heck is a lot better than the fucking dogshit smart fortwo.
Then again they could just sell it under the Toyota brand like over this side of the pond.
FR-S -> GT-86 should be the same deal.
I am surprised they didn't axe it earlier. it just seems like a huge money pit, and a pointless one at that. Why sell Toyota as Scion? Why sell Honda as Acura?
I wanted an FR-S so bad because I'm a sucker for car companies that promise the feel of 90's 2 door shit wagons but it was really all a lie.
rip scion

Multiple brands is a way to diversify and make it easy to figure out. Toyota has Lexus as their luxury brand, and Scion was thier youth brand, while Toyota was just the general brand. Same with Honda, Honda is the general brand, while Acura is their performance and luxury brand.
It's all about separating the branding. Some of it also comes from buying out other car company though.

Toyota GT86?

But it's only you guys in America that do this. Is it really all "Muh brand prestige"? "How can I feel pride in driving a toyoder if the same brand also sells $15k city cars"?
Introducing a new brand is like introducing a new character to a long running sitcom
You guys do know that the FR-S, iA and iM are being rebadged as Toyota cars for 2017, right?

To the company, yes, but it has a small degree to do with administration.
Like Audi is owned by Volkswagen and shares a lot of chassis, engine, and body parts. Audi serves effectively as Volkswagen's dedicated luxury brand. Brand splitting is just more notable in the US, but it's a thing in parts of Europe as well.
Didn't older people enjoy the scion box because it was easier to get in and out of?

I enjoyed it because it just seemed really roomy.
I know it looks ugly to a lot of people but I thought it was kinda cute ish.

I learned this from Regular Car Reviews.
Toyota is so boring that they had to have Subaru, a carmaker that doesn't make rwd coupes, design them a fun car. Toyota also failed so hard they partnered with Mazda for the iA, which is a mazda 2 copy, whiiiich is a ford fiesta.
Toyota sucks. They killed ALL their fun cars in favor of mushy, fwd, beige sedans.
Good riddance to automotive garbage.

The transport industry turned bland 20 years ago, when people got more concerned with safety features and fuel mileage than driving enjoyment. The last true bastion of a fun car that wasn't a sports or muscle car, one that was practical in daily life yet could still put a smile on your face, was the Crown Victoria, and that disappeared a few years ago.

"They read the same reports that we do; they see the same trends. "Millennials don't want to own anything," they hear."
This article confuses me a bit. Is this sarcasm or what people actually think?

Having actually driven an iQ, he is right. Despite a lot of the dumb aesthetic choices of the car, it was a breeze to drive in a city.
The scion tC was one of my favorite looking coupes on the market
rebadging is funny
I find it amusing that the Toyota/Scion iQ was rebadged as an Aston Martin once

came with a hefty price tag too iirc
I can see it now, the future old people who restore cars will try to get their hands on an xB.
Toyota GT86?
I would prefer that name but...
