• Upgrade or Scrap and Buy New?

My computer's getting along in its age, and its starting to crash more, overheat, and generally be a pain in the ass to play new games (Won't play Fallout 3, Trine, etc, on lowest. Have trouble playing Stalker.) Current Specs: Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs) Ram: 2046MB RAM 266MHz DDR2 Graphics Card ATi Radeon X1300 pro 256mb Motherboard: North Bridge Intel P965/G965 Revision C2 South Bridge Intel 82801HH (ICH8DH) Revision C2 Hard Drive: 120gb Is it worth upgrading or am I better off scrapping it and starting new? Should point out I have four RAM slots and I'm only using two (two 1gb sticks)
I have almost the same exact computer. Less Ram, More HDD, and more Ghz on mine but basically the same. I just scrapped it and ordered a whole new computer today. Of course I am using my optical drive and HDD from my old computer though :D
-snip- Never mind that. It is a dreadful dell mobo, with only 4 pci slots. Build a new computer.
Get 2 gig of more ram and a new graphics card.
Any suggestions?
What's your budget?
What's your budget?
Preferably around $250 USD, although I'm willing to compensate.
I don't know if you saw, what I said in my update, sorry but you're going to need to get a new computer. Knowing that you're want a gaming computer, how high can you go? For a good gaming computer, you'll want about $500.

Will you be able to salvage parts from your old computer, such as the CD drives and HD?
Will you be able to salvage parts from your old computer, such as the CD drives and HD?
DVD drive I can salvage, if there's room 2 1gb ram sticks, HD I can salvage
Awesome. The ram sticks are DDR2 correct? And about the motherboard and case, you'll want new ones.
Awesome. The ram sticks are DDR2 correct? And about the motherboard and case, you'll want new ones.
Ok on the Motherboard. The case hasn't been used, it's relatively new (barebones from Geeks)
Ok on the Motherboard. The case hasn't been used, it's relatively new (barebones from Geeks)
Case name? Is it ATX, or what size?
RAM is DDR2

Is the motherboard LGA 775?
You know how to build a computer right, or should I send you a tutorial?
You know how to build a computer right, or should I send you a tutorial?
I found a tutorial in another thread. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=778442

Where'd you see that?
Where'd you see that?
OP's first post. Did some reading. I'll let you improve upon what I post in the wishlist.
You sure it's a Dell?
The Chaintech (unused, still in box) I mentioned earlier has these specs: Socket 775 FSB 800MHZ (2) DDR4000 (1) AGP 8X,VGA Embedded (2)PCI (2) SATA w/ Raid 0, 1 (2) ATA133 (1) 10/100 Mbps LAN (8) USB 2.0 5.1CH Audio And yes, it's a Dell that I'm replacing.
You might want to move your old ram over to this new system also, along with the hard drive and disk drives. Use the case you have on hand, it looks alright. http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=14481408 Prismatex, what do you think? Probably want to get that diamond dust thermal compound, I couldn't seem to find it. You could always get a second GPU and crossfire if but that would be another $150.
I don't see anything immediately that's missing, but OP probably has a tiny 80GB hard drive or shit. I wouldn't keep his old RAM, as it's DDR2 533. I don't think he'll need AS5 since he's not getting aftermarket cooling.

Another 2 GB, although weak won't hurt, I mean will it? Not a signifigant benefit or anything but, hell why not. He already has a 120 gb HD. He might want to get a new one, but that's up to him. True about the AS5 though.
