Laptop won't deliver any bass through external sound devices

So my problem seems to be that my Asus K52J laptop won't give any bass through a subwoofer or high quality headphones.
I just got my Steelseries Siberia v2 headphones today, and tested them with my ipod, and they sounded great. But when I plug them into my laptop, I get this same stale sound world I'd get with the laptop's own speakers. I had the same problem with my 2.1 speaker subwoofer set, but back then I thought the problem was the woofer.
Now I'm not a tech wiz so I really don't know what's going on, is it simply that my laptop doesn't have the needed hardware to give enough bass?
Thanks in advance.
Are your sound drivers installed properly? Try opening up your sound mixer and messing with the EQ.
If you have windows 7, click the sound icon in the bottom left, then click mixer. Click the system sounds icon. When the window pops up go to playback and go to the properties of your default device (Your headphones). Click enhancements then click bass boost.
