The story centers on the relationship between a 12-year-old boy, Oskar, and a 200-year-old vampire child, Eli, of indeterminate gender. It takes place in Blackeberg, a working class suburb of Stockholm, in the early 1980s. The book focuses on the darker side of humanity, dealing with issues such as bullying, drugs, theft, pedophilia, prostitution and murder as well as the obvious supernatural themes. The book was a bestseller in the author's home country of Sweden and has been translated into Danish, German, Russian, English in 2007 and Finnish in 2008. A Swedish language film version by the same name, directed by Tomas Alfredson, was released in 2008 to widespread critical acclaim. An English language remake, to be directed by Matt Reeves, is scheduled for release in 2010.
This book is truly awesome. The plot is kind of like Twilight (high school kid falls in love with vampire), but while Twilight is some fat old vampire fetishist's wet dream, this is actually really good. The vampire, who appears to be a small child, alternates between being scary and really quite pathetic. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, but is forced to due to her condition. But even more disturbing than the vampire are the human characters. There's a pedo who kills for the vampire in order to get at her apparently twelve year old body. There's a guy who lives in a small apartment with 20 cats, all inbred with each other. The main character has serious issues as well, repeatedly pissing himself and having vivid fantasies about brutally murdering the bullies who torment him. The most 'good' characters are probably the bunch of drunks who are sort of trying to investigate. I am not looking forward to the English language movie remake though; first off, American remakes are shit. Secondly, Matt Reeves directed cloverfield, a film which I found boring and stupid. It's fine in Swedish with subtitles; leave it alone. [editline]05:48PM[/editline] Also the movie's on youtube: Part One
why on earth do you need an english remake for? let's remake Seven Samurai in English whi... wait
Why the fuck must everything be remade in America? Seriously can't people read? I can only speak English but I actually know how to follow subtitles.
Why the fuck must everything be remade in America? Seriously can't people read? I can only speak English but I actually know how to follow subtitles.
I didn't pay 15 bucks for a ticket to read.
I didn't pay 15 bucks for a ticket to read.
Then go watch something else. There's fuck loads of American films being churned out as it is.
I didn't pay 15 bucks for a ticket to read.
it's a foreign film don't complain if you can't understand the language of the foreign film
I liked the movie and I have the book but I haven't read all of it
This movie is awesome. Watched it a while ago and i loved it. Haven't read the book tho
This sounds atrocious.
This sounds atrocious.
Care to explain why?
that movie fucking ROCKED!
I'm from sweden and I have read the book and seen the movie. It's awesome and it's nothing like Twilight (thank god). But why make a remake?
I saw the movie in Toronto, subs were great.
Sounds extremely depressing to watch.
This movie is awesome and if you disagree you don't exist
terrible + overrated
This film is superb. I strongly recommend it. Has an amazing "Pool Scene."
Let The Right On In or Let The Right One In?
Let The Right On In or Let The Right One In?
Let The Right One In. Basically, vampires can't enter your house without your permission. Apparently.
I liked the film, it was quite good. I haven't read the book however. It isn't like any other vampire flick. It's not cliché at all, it's mysterious, dark and interesting whilst giving out some fantastic characters (and actors). I am not looking forward to the English remake either, they tend to be complete shite and I don't think it will hardly reach the bottom level of the first ones quality.
Saw the movie after heavy recommendations. Great, great movie. Not as creepy as the book judging from the summary above.
Man, I got this movie from Netflix, but returned it without watching it. Stupid me.
I may need to see this movie now... I just hope it's not like the usual boring Swedish drama movies which i just hate. (mostly due to the fact that our language sounds god awful)
This movie is fantastic. Saw it a couple of months ago. [sp]The 'pool scene' is a tad overkill though[/sp]
I may need to see this movie now... I just hope it's not like the usual boring Swedish drama movies which i just hate.
Example?
This movie is fantastic. Saw it a couple of months ago. [sp]The 'pool scene' is a tad overkill though[/sp]
Yeah, [sp]the amount of action there didn't fit with the rest of the movie. I was expecting the Underworld vampires to burst in and gunfight to break out.[/sp]
