Photograph: Reuters A US satellite company says it has taken a photograph of China's first aircraft carrier during trials in the Yellow Sea. It is believed to be the first time the 300-metre ship, a refitted former Soviet carrier, has been photographed at sea since it was launched in August. DigitalGlobe said one of its satellites took the picture on 8 December and an analyst at the firm spotted the ship this week while searching through images. Stephen Wood, director of DigitalGlobe's analysis centre, said he was confident the ship was the Chinese carrier because of the location and date of the image. The carrier has generated intense international interest because of what it might portend about China's intentions as a military power. The former Soviet Union started building the carrier, which it called the Varyag, but never finished it. When the USSR collapsed, the ship ended up in Ukraine. China bought the ship from Ukraine in 1998 and spent years refurbishing it. It had no engines, weapons or navigation systems when China acquired it. It has said the ship is intended for research and training, which has led to speculation that it plans to build copies. China initially said little about its plans for the vessel but has been more open in recent years, said Bonnie S Glaser, a China expert at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. "It wasn't until the Chinese actually announced they were sending it out on a trial run they admitted, 'Yes, we are actually launching a carrier,'" she said. China announced two sea trials, which took place this year, she added. Michael Schiffer, the US deputy assistant defence secretary for east Asia, said in August that the vessel could become operationally available by the end of next year, but without aircraft. "It will take a number of additional years for an air group to achieve the sort of minimal level of combat capability aboard the carrier that will be necessary for them to start to operate from the carrier," he said.[/release] http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/dec/15/us-satellite-china-aircraft-carrier?newsfeed=true
Pretty cool picture
Im happy for our chinese friends. Nice work, guys.
Now build 4,999 more
Hey, stop revealing our plans.
I prefer the Enterprise.
Oh no, now they have the same number of carriers as france
Anything you can build, I can build betteeeeeeeer Thanks China, we get it, you can build shit.
How is that showing off if a US satellite got the photo? I'd understand if it was them releasing a load of pictures of it saying "LOOK AT THIS! LOOK!" but that isn't the case. The article even says that they tried to keep it on the down low for a long time, which again is the opposite to showing it off.
I thought it would look like
US waves around it's military dick as much as it can and to anyone they meet, have several aircraft carriers and have invaded quite a few countries in the last 50 years. Chine gets 1 aircraft carrier. Fucking belligerent commie Chinese showing off and threatening the world.
Anything you can build, I can build betteeeeeeeer Thanks China, we get it, you can build shit.
Yeah totally dude China's just SHOWIN' OFF! What a bunch of attention whores!!!!!
its so exceedingly, fuckingly obvious that its a boat of self defense. probably for shit like the inevitable future war that north korea will get itself into
Admiral Kutznetsov class isn't that impressive compare to US CVs. I'll guess they just want to taste a carrier and build one on their own.
[release] Michael Schiffer, the US deputy assistant defence secretary for east Asia, said in August that the vessel could become operationally available by the end of next year, but without aircraft. "It will take a number of additional years for an air group to achieve the sort of minimal level of combat capability aboard the carrier that will be necessary for them to start to operate from the carrier," he said.[/release]
I was impressed until I read that paragraph.
Dont worry guys it'll probably break within the month.
Now maybe china can get involved in some peacekeeping missions
Im happy for our chinese friends. Nice work, guys.
Communist.
Why should anyone really worry? It's not a big deal it's an air craft carrier that a country with first-world connections and diplomatic obligations. The way I see it, China's is literally going through everything every other first-world country went through at least a hundred years ago, both socially, politically and economically.
I thought it would look like
That's an Allied aircraft carrier , you can even see allies' icon.
I was impressed until I read that paragraph.
It takes a shitton of flight hours to perfect landing on a carrier. Or at least that's what I would think. And they never tested their current aircraft to be able to land on a carrier.
Sabotage the fuck out of it
And then Battlefield 2 happened
Neat lookin'. Aircraft Carriers have always been cool.
That looks like a video card [editline]15th December 2011[/editline]
That's a nice 30 year old Soviet carrier you have there, China...
so How big is this aircraft carrier compared, to the US Nimitz class and the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers
so How big is this aircraft carrier compared, to the US Nimitz class and the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers
Well the Nimitz class is about 333 meters long and this is 300 meters long so they're pretty similar. The Queen Elizabeth class is about 284 meters long according to Wikipedia, so it's not as long.
If I remember correctly, China is building 2 more aircraft carriers currently.
