For the rest of us, we can expect updates “very soon” about further development and refinement of the Steam Controller. Looks way better but I'm still iffy about the touchpads instead of joysticks. Wish there was some way for me to try one
I actually really really wanna try this. Also, I really like the new design like a billion times more BUT glossy black plastic is a fingerprint magnet and ends up looking kinda bad quite quickly which is why, as much as I love shiny things, a matte finish is often better for things you will need to touch or hold a lot. Still though, I wanna get my claws on this thing.

The PS3 controller is made of shiny plastic but is not a fingerprint magnet. Why? Because it's curved and not a flat surface.
This is also composed of curved surfaces, so fingerprints should not be much of an issue.
Gloss black plastic yay!

Hey Cold, thanks for the feedback.
It would seem like our CMS had a little hiccup and regurgitated some of the intro to the bottom of the piece. That still doesn't excuse the fact that I should've checked the post after publishing, even if it all looked fine before. I apologise.

We need to get John Walker over here to personally apologise to each piece of criticism levelled against him too.

The PS3 controller is slightly shiny but there is a difference between that and an actual gloss finish which this controller seems to have. The bigger shiny bits seem to be where your thumbs might rest and I can just see them covered in prints after a particularly intense Dark Souls II boss on PC lol. But yeah, you are mostly right, and that is only the slightest of issues anyway, I just really wanna try the thing out.
I'm pretty hyped for this..
The entire package that is.
Still think the PS4 controller is the current best controller.
But I want to try this
I'm surprised they're allowed to do the ABXY with all the same colors and arrangement as the Xbox controller. They could've pulled an Ouya and made it G A B E.

It was really the only option, considering how 90% of PC games with controller support use Xbox button icons and such.
I'm not a fan of those directional buttons. I'd prefer a proper d-pad.
That is an improvement, though. Glad to see they're finding a balance between trying new things and not fixing what isn't broken.
Fuck you I want a touchscreen :(
They should have demos of these at gamestops and such so people can use the controllers as well as generate hype
The previous button arrangement would have been cool to try. Now it looks like yet another generic controller. I know that there's only so much you can do to a controller to make it usable and familiar, but the first model's looks like it would have worked just as well.

say what you want about PCGamesN, but atleast they respond to criticism in a nice manner

PC games aren't that big of a deal at Gamestops because you can't trade PC games in.

Sort of makes sense. It would definitely make some games like Castle Crashers even harder since it relied on the movement stick and the face buttons on the same horizontal axis. And AA batteries? It's already painful enough having to keep supplying rechargeable batteries to an Xbox 360 controller. Hope they at least make a lithium battery model.
I'm really curious about how the thumbstick substitutes will perform. I've gotten the impression that offsetting the thumbs from the center of the pads a certain distance will be the equivalent of tilting a thumbstick to a certain angle, which is something I can get behind. I'm at least confident in Valve's ability to produce something that is functional, which is why I'm so interested to see how their controller will work out in the end despite being otherwise pretty skeptical of the whole idea of reinventing the controller.

Or W A S D

Given time and suggestions, Valve will most likely make an alternate controller with traditional analog sticks.
RIP touchpad. I was looking forward to that.
Looks better, but I think they should consider a proper D-pad instead of the 4 directional buttons. Would make the controller a lot more versatile
I'll never understand why controllers don't put the buttons on the back of the controller so you can press them with your middle, ring, and little fingers. It's a pretty huge hindrance in general to have to sacrifice either moving or looking to press a button.

Had that exact discussion with someone the other day. Wouldn't it be great to have a controller that you not only held with the entire palm of your hand but also along with most of the length of your fingers below the controller, at the end of which buttons are placed? It'd make for a rather fat controller sure, but it would provide us with six extra buttons.
