[quote]MONTREAL -- A woman enjoying a quiet, belated birthday dinner with her husband in downtown Montreal died early on Thursday evening when a concrete panel from 18 stories above peeled of the exterior of a hotel and landed on her. She was 33. The shocking incident occurred in the Mikasa Sushi Bar which is on the ground floor of the Marriott Residence Inn. The concrete panel crashed through an atrium roof. "Ma femme! Ma femme! Stay with me!" screamed her husband, said Justine Lafond, who witnessed the incident. The panel hit her "directly" while she was seated at her table, said Montreal Police Const. Olivier Lapointe. He was unable to say if she died instantly. An emergency-room nurse at the Montreal General Hospital said the man, also 33, was brought in covered in his wife's blood. "It was everywhere." She said the man, who sustained serious injuries to his right hand, was in a secluded room in the ER surrounded by family. "Her birthday was Monday, that's what they were celebrating," said the nurse, who spoke on condition that her name not be published. Emergency responders decided they could not treat the victim, Const. Lapointe said. Her body was left in place in the restaurant, at the table where she was struck down, for investigators equipped with cameras. She was later declared dead by a doctor called to the scene, said Const. Lapointe. While her husband's life was not considered in danger, Const. Lapointe said he sustained "major nervous shock." The names of the couple have not been released. Police are considering the death accidental "at first view," Const. Lapointe said after investigators emerged from the hotel. They had inspected the room on the northwest corner of the 18th floor of the hotel, nearest to the missing slab. "There was nobody in the room at the time," Const. Lapointe said. The slab was the height of the exterior window. From the gap it left, it appeared to have been about one metre wide. The building's entire exterior above the first two floors is fronted by identical panelling. Firefighters were examining the complete facade to determine if there were others panels that could detach and fall, Const. Lapointe said. Wow. This is so freakin' sad. That too, during a romantic dinner. Hopefully, the husband recovers from the shock well.

Quite sad, especially since that was his wife, the person he vowed to love forever and die with.
