It can very easily mislead people into thinking that bad things are suddenly happening much more often than they ever did before when, realistically, that's probably not the case. A really good example of this is America's 'Stranger Danger' fear that has erupted over the past few decades. The chances of your kid getting abducted isn't any higher, but because the news is so ubiquitous and reports on it so much, it [I]seems[/I] like it's much more commonplace and people end up getting paranoid. That's not necessarily what's happening here, but I'd hardly take two events as an indication of a trend. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were literally hundreds of hate crimes that take place every year that we don't hear about.
