Washington (CNN)Newly confirmed Defense Secretary James Mattis sent a strong signal of support to NATO on Monday, reaching out to three critical alliance partners and saying the US had an "'unshakeable commitment to NATO."
Mattis -- whose embrace of NATO differs from comments made by President Donald Trump -- made his first official calls to Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg and to his counterparts from two key NATO allies, UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon and Canadian Minister of Defense Harjit Sajjan.
According to the Pentagon's official readout, Mattis in his conversation with Fallon "emphasized the United States' unshakeable commitment to NATO."
And the official statement issued after the call with Stoltenberg acknowledged the symbolism of the communication, saying that Mattis "wanted to place the call on his first full day in office to reinforce the importance he places on the alliance."
The Mad Dog may be the only one with the balls to stand up to Russia in Trump's team.
He's probably the only one with the balls to stand up to Trump himself too.
At least there's 1 sane person on the inside.
Remember, for trump to use any nuclear weapons, he will need mattis's approval first.
Hopefully he can stand up to Trump whilst also not getting kicked out
My god our government is such a mess now with Trump not only appointing people to departments that have no idea what they do, but appointing people that directly contradict his own policies.
Yes, this is good that at least the DoD will keep the US with NATO, but it just goes to show how incompetent Trump is at this job. We had a taste of it when he directly contradicted Pence during the campaign, and now these people are in actual power.
We have a secretary of interior who doesn't want to sell federal land to the states and is open minded about climate change while at the same time we have a environmental-hater heading the EPA and a fucking oil tycoon as Sec of State.
Mattis will talk shit about Russia while Trump praises Putin.
why would Trump use nuclear weapons though
He has suggested that he would be open to use them in general. He didn't say specifically "i am going to nuke this place" or anything of that sort, but the fact that he is so open to using them is concerning
Nothing wrong with staying in NATO, as long as we make it very clear to our allies that it's time to step up and pay what they owe for it.
Imagine a Coup installing Mattis as President. That's more left field than Bernie entering the ring with a folding chair.

A coup of any kind in the US would suck massive balls and you have no idea what you're talking about
A coup of any kind in the US would suck massive balls and you have no idea what you're talking about
Where exactly did I say it would be a good thing? Words in my mouth much?

The news of the last few days isn't very funny for most of us.
I swear Facepunch is losing user's with a sense of humor more everyday.
sh is no place for fun
The only jokes in SH are the users themselves
I swear Facepunch is losing user's with a sense of humor more everyday.
Even as a joke it makes zero sense whatsoever
I'm sorry I'll remember to shove the stick further up my ass before I post again so it'll be more in line with what you guys want.
Grr, everything sucks, gloom and nihilism are my blood. Fun and light hearted jabs at recent events as a coping mechanism is for normies. Is that better?

It'd be as unexpected and improbable as the whole WWE bernie with a folding chair thing. Hey wouldn't it be weird if this thing happened? Something that has never happened in this country before? Wasn't even meant to be funny, just a light hearted comment about the unexpected and beyond improbable.

Yeah, just look at this users quote:
Remember, for trump to use any nuclear weapons, he will need mattis's approval first.
Hilarious.
He has suggested that he would be open to use them in general. He didn't say specifically "i am going to nuke this place" or anything of that sort, but the fact that he is so open to using them is concerning
I'm somewhat certain that most world leaders have said this at some point. What would be the point of a nuclear deterrent if not to deter?
He has suggested that he would be open to use them in general. He didn't say specifically "i am going to nuke this place" or anything of that sort, but the fact that he is so open to using them is concerning
Why wouldn't they be on the table?
What's the purpose of having them if you declare that you will not use them?
Why wouldn't they be on the table?

So the US using them wouldn't have negative effects you're not mentioning here?
They're not meant to be used unless you want to doom humanity but whatever floats your boat I guess

Politics being a joke is how trump won.

God forbid people react in a way different than you. It's almost like you're complaining about something that were complaining about and still acting like you've got the "high ground" or whatever.
If this is a joke to you, then laugh. But don't insist I have to take it as a joke because you don't give a shit.
Imagine a Coup installing Mattis as President. That's more left field than Bernie entering the ring with a folding chair.
Jesus that would be bad for everyone. I mean everyone. But I get what you're saying about Mattis.
So the US using them wouldn't have negative effects you're not mentioning here?

Right now, I think the chances of needing them are extremely small.
However, a president operating on the assumption and promises that no situation could arise where he needs them isn't great.

It's not great, but nuclear weapons are a powerful diplomatic tool and I don't think anyone running for the presidency should preemptively denounce their utilization.
Imagine a Coup installing Mattis as President. That's more left field than Bernie entering the ring with a folding chair.
Ah yes, i too want horrific and long World War Three in which half of the United States ends up dying as a result.
why would Trump use nuclear weapons though
Because he's an idiot that doesn't understand the nearly unimaginable devastation they bring forth.
Because he's an idiot that doesn't understand the nearly unimaginable devastation they bring forth.
thankfully the president can't launch nuclear weapons without clearance from the sec. of defense
For real though I'm really glad Mattis is in Trump's cabinet.
He's actually a really good pick, and a really ballsy guy too. He's the only person standing between Trump and an international disaster, and I'd rather have him than anyone else right now.
not when trump just signs an executive order without thinking anything though
