Jazz is something I've always wanted to start getting into a little bit--but it's so vast that I need a little bit of help getting me started in the genre. Hopefully someone can provide some suggestions to help get me started with Jazz. I'm looking for some of the basics, but really, anything's on the boards. I don't mind looking myself, but I really have no idea where to start. I play piano, so I'm pretty sure I'd probably really like some of the more piano heavy jazz, but I also love some of the old big band stuff (ala Frank Sinatra, and yes, dare I say, Michael Buble). But don't be bashful, post anything you think would be helpful for someone new to Jazz to get exposed to.
read a bit of history, it helps with understanding. familiarize yourself with the different movements.
this is a great page if you don't mind reading quite a lot, very good run down on jazz history. at least get to know what jazz came from.
when you listen to a recording, get to know the names of the musicians on it. jazz has a strong community, and it's easy to branch out to different recordings by looking for certain players you're already familiar with.
so some basic names to check out: duke ellington, charlie parker, dizz gilespie, sarah vaughan, count bassie, louis armstrong, billie holiday, ella fitzgerald, thelonius monk
