Randomly generate a dungeon for loot? What took you so god damn fucking god damn long
so they've finally accepted this ridiculous notion they had of diablo 2 and 3 being psuedo-trading games was total bullshit self-deception, and what people really wanted was an actual dungeon crawler
Randomly generate a dungeon for loot? What took you so god damn fucking god damn long
Because the way they authored the levels and their assets meant dungeons couldn't be as randomized as they were in D2 and other games in the genre. It's sort of a hybrid between true random generation and what Torchlight does (hand-crafted chunks with 'set piece' tiles peppered around the level in addition to randomized corridors/tiles). The overworld was very much static though, and has preset spots for what little random content can spawn in any given seed. If the Loot Run levels are randomly generated they either figured out how to get D3's level design assets to play nicely with true random generation, or they will be using a simplified tileset for them.
Whenever I played D3 I always found myself annoyed with the fact that I had to run through dialogue and story content whenever I wanted to run out and do some hack 'n slashing, so I guess random loots dungeons are a nice thing. I can't really say that the story in D2 was much better (well, ok I can, but that's because it didn't try to have twists while being horribly cliche about it) but it wasn't in your face constantly like it was in D3.
I always thought the current loot system was REALLY dodgy from the outset, you can't get any decent gear for the character you're playing as from normal looting above level 40 or so. I have absolutely no idea how I managed to beat the game without the auction house with my first character.
