Blind and foolish love caused a woman to stay in an abusive relationship with former AFL footballer Fabian Francis, a court has heard.
Francis, 37, of Greenwith, is on trial in the South Australian District Court charged with 20 abuse-related crimes against his former wife, former policewoman Debra Buckskin, between 1998 and 2011.
In his closing address, Prosecutor Mark Norman compared the relationship to a boiling saucepan where the temperature rose gradually.
"It has been said if you drop a frog in a saucepan of boiling water it will jump out," he told the jury on Monday.
"If you put that same frog in a saucepan of cold water and gradually put the heat up it will stay there until it is boiled alive."
Mr Norman said Ms Buckskin endured years of abuse at the hands of her jealous, controlling and cruel husband.
He said the former Port Adelaide star blackened his wife's eyes, bruised her body, broke her teeth, threatened her with an axe and forced soil into her mouth.
Her evidence was "clear, consistent and compelling" and the accounts of abuse, recorded threats and injuries could not have been fabricated without an "extraordinary species of conspiracy", he said.
Mr Norman said Ms Buckskin considered herself a proud Aboriginal woman who had suffered "emotional terrorism".
The court also heard Ms Buckskin abused and hit Francis, allegedly punching his teeth, and "fixed him up" with a golf club after she suspected him of affairs.
Defence counsel David Stokes said the relationship was dysfunctional and two-sided.
"They couldn't live together and couldn't live apart ... they did press each other's buttons," he said.
"There was for both of them abuse and (a) level of violence, push and shove, give and take, in the relationship where each was obsessed by the other."
Francis and Ms Buckskin married in 1999 and divorced in December 2007.
The case will continue on Tuesday.
What a shitty thing to do.
Perhaps the ex- was a bit of a shithead?
kinky.
she must of felt dirty after that
She must have a bad taste in her mouth
AFL is shit anyway
(I'm from NSW, of course that's my only reply)
Not surprised.
Speaking generally, most footballers, be it AFL or Rugby, are wankers.
Stay classy.
i thought the title implied that the footballer was forced to shit in his ex's mouth.
Since soap is put in your mouth for swearing, that seems like something someone would do to someone else for saying something good.
This thread leaves a bad taste in my mouth
wow soil doesn't taste that bad, stop overreacting.

wow seriously guys, stop overreacting
Depends what soil it is.
Australian soil generally tastes really salty, or at least physical education tells me that.
AFL players are dicks, what else is new?
At least it wasn't gang rape this time.
Sounds like he made her eat his dust.
