Thirteen spectators were medically evaluated, said Joie Chitwood III, president of the speedway. Eight declined treatment, four were treated on site, and one was taken to the hospital in stable condition, he said.
"I'm really proud of the fact that the fence worked," he said. "We will take this situation, we will learn from it, we will analyze it."
One of the cars literally flew at the fence.
That guy walked away from that car like it was nothin'
He hit that fence doing close to 190 miles per hour and came to a dead stop. Then he got hit by another car
A bit surreal the winner of that race, on that lap, was Dale Earnhardt Jr, and his dad died on that track driving the number 3 car
I only watch NASCAR for the crashes, but would never want to see it up close like that.
I grew up with some brothers whos dad was really into NASCAR and had a basement full of car parts.
I bet he would love to have been injured by the number 3 car.

Welcome to professional motorsport, where having a crash so severe they cannot recognize your car is not only surviveable, but walk-away-from-able.
I love it.

And the fence still repelled it. Amazing catchfence.

I think this wreck shows that more than any other wreck

Gnarly what these cars let people walk away from. Skip to about 2:20 to see him just... step out of what used to be a car
I'm thankful that we don't have anymore Fireball Robert or Don Mactavish accidents these days. The vehicles are so protective from years of innovation, but honestly, racing will always be dangerous.
I find it funny that 102 people run up to the car - I feel like at that point they'd all just be getting in the way of eachother..
HOLY FUCK i can't believe i missed this - not that i typically watch NASCAR, but as I was going to bed I noticed that they had just lifted the red flag and I was a little excited to watch some Daytona racing....but I fell asleep with the TV on and missed this
No one badly hurt, thats good

I might be fucked up for asking this but is there a 1080p version of that picture I can use for my wallpaper?

up close view

i found this because my phone was fucking up on the posted video, not quite as intense as that one just posted but in the crowd almost inline with where he hit the fence
Seeing accidents like these with no major injuries is truly a technological marvel to proud of after all these years of safety improvements.

Its crazy some of the accidents that happen that people walk away from.
For example, take Robert Kubica's crash in Canada in 07

The fact that he almost got up and walked away from this is just a testament to the technological advancements.
On the flip side though, there are some minor accidents that happen that drivers don't walk away from. So there is a lot to go still.
Thank god for the fence. If it wasn't there, who knows what might've happened
I read the thread title and was really confused as to why everyone was rating it winner.
Different view from the stands:

Also, article doesn't say it, but the one fan that was taken to the hospital has been treated and released.
Did that wire fence the shrapnel and component parts from the wreckage hit actually serve its purpose or did it fail in this case
Because 13 people were "medically evaluated" and it looks absolutely shredded in some places

Oh they'd be a lot more than "medically evaluated" if it didn't serve its purpose. The gaps in the fence are just wide enough to let small pieces of shrapnel through at the very most. I'd consider this a victory for the fence

Only 1 of those went to the hospital and they're fine
It very clearly served its purpose

If you look at this video

It looks like a missile hit the fence.

In this video, it really does:

those videos from the spectators' side of the fence do a great job of illustrating the amount of power the drivers are fighting with

Makes me wonder just how many people who die in wrecks could survive if their car too had a roll cage and harnesses.
What surprises me is the amount of what can arguably be called 'flight mechanics' the latest vehicles seem to possess. While their form may keep them on the ground in optimal conditions, any disruption of that seems to turn it into an ill-suited aircraft.
This video in particular is astounding - the car lifts almost purely due to upwards aerodynamic force and then is kept from flipping on its' roof by the aerodynamic forces acting on the upside-down chassis. Honestly, under the right (wrong) conditions, these could actually take flight and hit the side fence like a missile.
I thought this seemed familiar. Honestly in the video, even in slo-mo, it is hard to say how much of the vehicle's flight path was due to external forces and what was due to its aerodynamic properties, but it appears as if the vehicle rose banked to the right and was steered by the air being forced underneath it into the fence.
In this video, it really does:
God damn that video is fucking orgasmic.
Those sounds hnnnnnng.
It's really incredible that the fence saved people from dying. I keep thinking back to the Nurburgring VLN race back in March of this year where a spectator was a killed, albeit because they were in an "unauthorized" area of the spectator's area (past the fence actually, I think), and reason that spectating NASCAR races must have a higher risk than other series and tracks.
But actually, no. There are more spectator deaths are soccer games than motorsport races, by quite a margin.

On a related note, here is another example of a catch fence somehow saving the day.
