• PS3 Slim 160GB - Leaving marks on discs.

Problem I just picked up a PlayStation 3 on boxing day and I have noticed that it is leaving small hairline marks on any disk inserted into it. They aren't scratches as they wipe off with a microfibre cloth. This is affecting all disks placed into the drive, though it doesn't happen every time a disk is inserted, 8/10 maybe. I have done some looking around the internet but nothing is conclusive there are more questions then answers so to speak. Has anyone had any similar problems with their PS3's? Is there any known fix? My apologies if this is the wrong forum to post this. Oops I posted this is the main section, could a mod please move this to the technical support sub forum please.
Convert it to communism. On a serious note, I wouldn't have a clue what the problem is, I don't own a PS3. (User was banned for this post ("This isn't helpful" - mahalis))
If they are just marks not scratches and come off when wiped surely it isn't a problem?
Well I didn't just fork out money for a new ps3 to have it dirtying discs, I've got a feeling its just some sort of residual buildup on the loading mechanism feed. Still I get paranoid with my games and having streaks across them isn't helping.
Yeah I can understand that. I wouldn't worry about it though
I sat around putting the disks in and out of the drive and the amount of residue is reducing, leading me to believe that it was just a build up on the feed.
you're a genius
You're probably not, but are you moving the PS3 while it has a disc in use? Other then that if it just wipes off I guess it's fine.
It's probably some excess oil on the drive spindle. I had to fix a friends Xbox 360 drive and putting oil inside the spindle and on the rails fixed it.

What's the point of putting holes in the middle of the disk? I just looked and yes they do come in contact with it..
Then.. 1.How does the disks spin? 2. What's the point of putting holes in the middle of the disk?
Sits on a plate that's held by a magnet and spins on that.
Sits on a plate that's held by a magnet and spins on that.
If you look a the picture there's a magnet on the spindle in the middle, that attracts the magnet in the plate I assume you are talking about and makes sure the disk stays in place.
From what I can gather the only thing greased inside the BR player is the motor that drives the feeder mechanism and the motor that moves the laser back and forth, but it doesn't physically come into contact with the disk.

Problem found /thread
If they came into contact with the disk, then there would be muck everywhere, the marks are being caused by the ejection process, not while the drive is being span up, If that were the case there would be smudges all over the place due to the spinning motion. These marks are straight lines.
I thought you mean they where circular marks which is what would happen not muck everywhere, either way it's oil, and the disk does slip onto the spindle. Heck you have to stick the disk onto the spindle yourself on a laptop drive.
