ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — EDITOR'S NOTE: On July 16, 1955, Associated Press reporter Bob Thomas wrote a story about the imminent opening of an elaborate theme park in California that was conceived by none other than Walt Disney. The park opened the next day.Like the animator and entrepreneur, Disneyland was ambitious and imaginative — a real-life play land for children and adults alike. Thomas, a longtime Hollywood reporter for AP and author of a Walt Disney biography who died in 2014, wrote that Disneyland cost $17 million to build, and that no detail was spared. He also noted that a day trip was doable but "you'd no doubt end up with a headache."
Sixty years later, the AP is making this report and photos available.
_____
Walt Disney's 20-year dream comes true tomorrow when the gates of the $17-million Disneyland opens for the first time.
This is the modern wonderland that a mouse built. Well, Mickey Mouse started it anyway. The cartoon star was the first success in the fabulous career of Walt Disney.
Then came the Three Little Pigs, Donald Duck, Pluto, Snow White, The Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo, Pinocchio and a host of other characters who became famous around the world. Somewhere along the line the cartoon wizard got the notion for an amusement park. Not the usual Coney Island affair, but an imaginative playground that would delight young and old.
Disney made his move a year ago. He succumbed to the lure of television and arranged to tie in the TV show (he hosted) with a Disneyland park. A survey showed that this citadel of sunshine and orange groves, accessible to 10 million population, was the best location.
A year later the brightly painted Disneyland is open for business.
Twenty-two thousand invited guests are expected to pour into the park tomorrow for the opening festivities. They include mayors and officials, education leaders and businessmen from southern California, press from throughout the nation, move stars and their children.
The opening ceremonies will be telecast by ABC from 5:30 to 7 p.m. (CST), with Disney, Art Linkletter, Irene Dunne, Fess Parker, Davy Crockett and others.
Some 2,500 men were laboring to finish Disneyland for the premiere.
Despite the last-minute rush, the entire park has been planned down to the smallest detail. And Disney is a great stickler for detail. The interior of the railroad station, for example, had to be designed with the ornate woodwork of the 1900 period. The 72 horses on the $102,000 King Arthur's carousel were rebuilt so they would appear to be leaping instead of merely galloping.
The site of the park was a 160-acre orange ranch just off the Santa Ana Freeway. The plan was drawn up with an old-fashioned city park at the hub and the realms of Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland fanning out in four directions. The Disney people estimate a patron need travel no more than 1.4 miles to see the whole place.
Nah, it's way more than that. It costs $79 to get in these days. Damned inflation.

Not inflation. Disney used to charge per ride on top of the admission fee.

Ya that, the confusion it created, and the actors being shuttled around lead Walt to believe he could do better. So he did

$79 is a 3-day. It's $100 for a 1-day, and from experience that means you'll get on maybe 4-5 decent rides if you're lucky.

I don't know what you're doing at Disneyland for a whole day to only ride 5 rides. I went for two days and easily rode everything I wanted (except all the water rides and Matterhorn cause they were closed ;-;) multiple times. You just don't know how to Disneyland.
I <3 Disneyland. I had a great time. Me and my friend went and it was his first time and we ended the day on California Screaming as the fireworks were going off. It was quite magical.

Last time I went (admittedly was like 5 years ago), we waited for well over 2 hours per ride. Maybe we just picked a bad day.
I think what he means is most of the time there is long wait times for just about every ride, and it's hard to get through most of them in 1 day.
A lesson I've learned from going to themeparks is to just skip a day of college or work and go when pretty much everyone else would be otherwise occupied.

You totally picked a bad day.
You don't go during the summer. People are off during the summer. You don't go on Halloween, Christmas, New Years, or any holiday. You don't go on the weekends. You go in the middle of the week in an obscure month where nothing's happening, like February. (not on Valentines day)
My parents have taken me during February. No one is there. The ride takes longer than it does waiting in line.

You and your family aren't people?
I don't think it's that easy for everyone to just go in the middle of the week in an obscure month.
[editline]t[/editline] Then again in Europe most people go for multiple days.

Then don't bother going. It's not worth it.

Me and my buds went in January this year and Matterhorn, Splash Mountain, Grizzly River Rapids AND Soaring Over California were all closed! It was total bummer, but we still had fun.

One time I went to Alton Towers and on that day apparently we were the only people who decided to go because we almost literally had the whole park to ourselves. I must have seen a grand total of a dozen other people there the whole day. Sometime you just gotta get lucky.
My Grandpa has the first ticket to Disneyworld. Its really cool. Ill try to get a pic of it next time im over there.
I've always believed I was born in the wrong time... Nowadays we are struggling to even try and have days out and holidays now :v:

My only trip to WDW was on Halloween and we didn't really go through any bad lines.
It's more smart planning and avoiding the obvious days like summer and end of the year.

Welp x1 Late for me
I'd go a lot more often if the tickets weren't so fucking expensive now. It kinda sucks because I live in Tustin and it's like a 15 minute drive for me.
The only times I ever go are when someone buys me the damn ticket. I heard they also got rid of the socal resident discount and the annual pass is like 600 bucks or some crazy amount. I'd literally have to sell my car to afford one. And I think for the price of one ticket it really isn't worth it anymore since there's huge crowds of tourists and wait times.:suicide:
I'd much rather go to six flags or knott's. I could do both of those for basically the same price as disney, plus they have better rides IMO. I will say California Screamin is a pretty fun coaster though. Maybe I'm biased or something.
