Please suggest me a worthy Router, my current one has finally gone haywire

It being 6 years old, I can see why. Whenever I log into Steam now, it randomly disconnects my entire internet for at least an hour. It just started doing this since yesterday. Not only that, but if two xbox's log in at the same time (Even just a xbox and someone on windows live) it will also randomly disconnect us.
I haven't researched on a router for years now... so I'm curious to know which would actually be worth putting my money into? I'm tired of all this shit...
Thanks. :smith:

Best router there is, no doubt about it. You can install custom firmware with ease. And its reliability is great.
Oh and it is $20 cheaper if you buy it now.

Get the US government to send you a $100 Wireless N Gigabit router for free.
Why the fuck did you disagree with me.
It is the only router on the planet that has 5 stars with newegg for a reason.

My automerge!
I have the DIR-655 from D-Link.
Works decent. I'm not sure if I would classify it as epic-tier though, since I haven't really tested any others.

This is seriously the best router to ever exist.

Those are excellent little devices.

I wouldn't really base any decisions on that. Most of the user reviews on Newegg are laughably bad.
I'm sorry, but why pay $80 when you could be sent a router that supports dual band wireless N, guest wireless networks, gigabit ethernet, and is open source (supports tomato, dd-wrt, etc) for free?
Very similar specs to the WRT54GL, but half the price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166032
Good stuff.

Because when you flash the router it takes off the broadband testing system they put onto it. Then they will charge you for the router or hit you with a big fee. Also the router downloads and uploads periodically to test your internet speed.
In other words are you retarded?

you have no idea what you're talking about
I have a wrt54gl Amazing router with dd-wrt, even good without it
a wrt300n as a repeater dd-wrt with the power set to max
and an airport extreme i got for free. works good but no customization really at all
I'm also running a WRT54GL, but with Tomato.
Love it.

Here's another vote for the WRT-54GL. Got mine for 40 bucks at a local computer store, installed custom firmware on it, and haven't had any issues since. The range is great (and customizable with the custom firmware) the speed is great, with custom firmware you get a really robust QoS engine, and you can tweak any other aspect of the router's operation. Get one, you won't regret it.
Though, if I was OP, I'd go with this:

this, but only, ONLY if you instal dd-wrt.
only. ONLY. FUCKING DO IT.

Yeah...its not like I have one or anything...
It only uploads and downloads when you're not using it. I use a shit-ton of bandwidth already, but it still finds time to test my connection. It also allows me to see if and when my ISP is throttling my connection.
The firmware it has is perfectly fine, I haven't found a reason to switch to dd-wrt or tomato. Also, I doubt that they would care / notice if you reflashed it. They're sending out 20,000 of them.
I have a shitty Cisco 1811W that seems like the WRT54GL would trounce it hands down. I don't know how to port forward in my own goddamn router after several years of research and ownership
