The Constellation programme envisaged new rockets and a new crewship called Orion to put astronauts on the lunar surface by 2020.
But in his 2011 budget request issued on Monday, Mr Obama said the project was too costly, "behind schedule, and lacking in innovation".
US space agency Nasa has already spent $9bn (£5.6bn) on the programme.
The president said Constellation was draining resources from other US space agency activities. He plans instead to turn to the private sector for launch services.
"While we're cancelling Constellation, we're not cancelling our ambitions," said Jim Kohlenberger, chief of staff at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).
"This isn't a step backwards. I think the step backwards was trying to recreate the Moon landings of 40 years ago using largely yesterday's technology, instead of game-changing new technology that can take us further, faster and more affordably into space."
The decision to cancel Constellation was immediately condemned by Congressional figures who represent workforces dependent on the programme.
The Moon project was initiated by President George W Bush in the wake of the 2003 Columbia shuttle accident, which saw seven astronauts lose their lives when their vehicle broke up on re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere.
The idea was to retire the spaceplane and replace it with a new ship and new rockets capable of sending humans beyond low-Earth orbit (LEO).
But critics claimed the programme was never properly funded, and when it ran into technical difficulties its time schedule also began to slip.
In addition to the $9bn spent on the programme to date, Nasa will have to spend a further $2.5bn to close it completely.
Read more @ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8489097.stm
Seems like a shame to me, all that money already spent on it too.
Edit: Fucking sticky 'l' key.
NO! I LIKED OBAMA! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!
/caps
Obama is getting worse and worse. I hope that fucker does something that forces us to impeach him.
Good.
Space is stupid.
Sigh....
NASA needs more money ASAP, Fuck the military. Typical politicians, always thinking short term... soon we're not going to have anything left on this planet and then we'll be screwed.
At this rate we'll never get to Mars. :argh:
Well that sucks
At this rate we'll never get to Mars. :argh:
spoiler alert: there is nothing of value on mars
Aww :(
Ah well space isn't that important, it's really just a cool luxury. The money can go to important shit.

yeah i doubt the earth is going to reach a point at which living on the moon seems preferrable.
At this rate we'll never get to Mars. :argh:
The United States has no affect on weather other countries go to mars. Hell if the Russians decide they want the moon or Mars hell they'll take it!
Yes Obama is a terrible president because he canceled something that costs unreal amounts of money that isn't needed during an economic crisis.
What's funny is that their spending a bit more than a quater of the total cost to shut it down.
Edit: Why don't we all team up for once and go further than the moon god dammit. Think world team spirit!!

Actually NASA is still getting a budget increase. :buddy:

Grrrr Obama cut spending on a nonessential space exploration project that would be of no real benefit to anyone.
[editline]10:08PM[/editline]
iMPEACH!!!
Goddammit.
I wanted to be able to go to the moon before I die.
Leave space to Russia and China, the two most glorious nations eyes ever witnessed.
To Communism's triumph lead us on!!
The United States has no affect on weather other countries go to mars. Hell if the Russians decide they want the moon or Mars hell they'll take it!
except they havent been there because they are poor and incompetent and there is absolutely nothing of value on the moon.

It would be a benefit to science, and where would you be now without that?
Leave space to Russia and China, the two most glorious nations eyes ever witnessed.

Or we can leave it to the US, Russia, and China to share a space budget. But that probably won't happen..
What's funny is that their spending a bit more than a quater of the total cost to shut it down.
how is that funny or ironic
It would be a benefit to science, and where would you be now without that?
exactly where we are now with less useless-ass moon rocks.
FUCK
YOU
Well, I guess there's always commercial interests.
And here I was thinking you were a Socialist, Obama.
We should just leave space exploration to the private sector.
except they havent been there because they are poor and incompetent and there is absolutely nothing of value on the moon.
You know what Lankist sometimes you just need to dream.
The United States has no affect on weather other countries go to mars. Hell if the Russians decide they want the moon or Mars hell they'll take it!
Yes, but I have less chance to become an astronaut of another country's space program than my own, so I take greater interest in projects involving NASA.
We'll still get to another celestial body, I was only hoping to be a part of it.
We should just leave space exploration to the private sector.
That's a terrible idea. Nothing will happen.
That's a terrible idea. Nothing will happen.
Whole lot of nothin happenin there.
Or we can leave it to the US, Russia, and China to share a space budget. But that probably won't happen..
Joke aside, I think the Moon and Mars trip were a bit to ambitious. In a state such as USA already is in today, spending on the space does not lead anywhere.
But
Space
Noooo
