In a deal near seven figures, Sony Pictures Animation won a three-studio auction for an animated movie pitch centering on the Emoji, those lovable round headed figures that are as much a staple of social media correspondence as adverbs and adjectives. The project will be co-written by Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis, with the latter directing the feature.
It will be directed by Anthony Leondis, whose work includes Igor, Lilo and Stitch 2, and Kronk's New Groove.
Why.
Who would actually watch this?
They've made films about Legos and even battleship the board game

The Lego movie was great
At least for the Lego movie, they had a lot more ground to work with, unlike emojis, which are just symbols.
I don't even know what the difference between an emoji and an emoticon is or why they're suddenly so popular
When I was teaching this past winter at a middle school over 50% of the black kids were wearing emoji clothes. I remember one kid bragging to me that his parents spent over $200 dollars on his emoji tracksuit. It was ugly as fuck, but kids think its cool.
Sony will make money as long as they get it out in a timely fashion because its trending in the younger generation right now.
I would've somewhat watched this if it was a film about emoticons in general since there's so burpin' many of them. Maybe have them fend off against the invading forces of Emojis as they try to force the emoticons into obsolescence.
But we can't have this much creative input with Hollywood nowadays, can we?
i can't wait for their next movie about selfies

Because Steve Jobs and Scott Forstall
7 figures for a movie about emoticons? oh man, sounds like a waste IMO. how could you even work a movie out of emojis..
Unless its some documentary on the modern online culture of youths who use emotes to express themselves due to a lack of self confidence about doing it verbally I dont understand how this is going to be a thing.
This movie is going to be the best movie ever. :ok:
They should just spend 7 figures on a movie about postals ass instead. Would probably be more interesting.
who did they even license them from
this sounds like it would come out as either a cash-grab knockoff of inside-out's emotion theme, or be some hideous classic story told through hip pop culture references

Movies usually take a long time to make though. It's a pretty big gamble.
Case in point, the Grumpy Cat movie.

Are you referring to the Lifetime Christmas movie that aired a while ago? Or is there some other cinematic production going on?

That one. For some reason I thought it was getting a theatrical release, but still, it aired way after people stopped caring.
I don't know, a horror film could work with this. Some of those things are fucking creepy man.
Kronk's New Groove.
What. I never knew this existed. Is it good?
What. I never knew this existed. Is it good?
It's great, at least from what I remember.
"Hmmm, what are the hip kids interested in nowadays?"
it will be like this right

there we don't need a movie now

That's exactly what I thought, except as a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy where emojis are the major plot device. Perhaps some misunderstanding could happen as a result of emojis, and that could be a major part of the story that inspires PAUL RUDD TO DRIVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO FIND HIS TRUE LOVE.
Either way it sounds awful.
What if its a blatant inside out ripoff?
Pixels, and now this?
Is Hollywood trying to make me hate my own generation?
i can't wait for their next movie about selfies
Can't wait for it to turn out to be a [sp]horror[/sp] movie.
I fucking hate emojis and I'm not really sure why. Am I old?
I think the most amazing part of this that were all missing is that apparently there were multiple studios bidding for the rights to make this film
