• Pope Francis claims the Armenian Genocide 'the first genocide of the 20th century', pisses off Turke
Turkey has summoned the Vatican ambassador after Pope Francis used the word "genocide" to describe mass killing of Armenians under Ottoman rule in WW1 100 years ago, reports say. Armenia and many historians say up to 1.5 million people were systematically killed by Ottoman forces in 1915. Turkey has consistently denied that the killings were genocide. The Pope's comments came at a service to honour a 10th Century mystic, attended by Armenia's president. The dispute has continued to sour relations between Armenia and Turkey. The Pope first used the word genocide for the killings two years ago, prompting a fierce protest from Turkey. At Sunday's Mass in the Armenian Catholic rite at Peter's Basilica, he said that humanity had lived through "three massive and unprecedented tragedies" in the last century. "The first, which is widely considered 'the first genocide of the 20th Century', struck your own Armenian people," he said, in a form of words used by a declaration by Pope John Paul II in 2001.
Source: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-32272604
I don't see why they're denying it. They can even claim they had nothing to do with it as at the time Turkey wasn't a democracy.
I don't see why they're denying it. They can even claim they had nothing to do with it as at the time Turkey wasn't a democracy.
Neo-ottomanistic masturbation, thats why Turkey denies it.
same can be said for japan's actions in ww2, you won't really find a country that accepts the shit things that they did - of course germany is the exception
and all that took was the complete destruction and unconditional surrender of germany so they could finally admit "ya got us good lads"
fun fact: the word "genocide" was invented because of the armenian genocide. the modern world had never seen such mass killings on that scale, they had to invent a word to describe it because no word existed that could do it justice.

Yeah, the Armenian Genocide was completely sickening. There are stories of women's skirt's being lit on fire before being rolled off, or thrown off a cliff. Absolutely disgusting, it was a game for those committing it.
Can't Francis just decide whether he's a scumfuck or a cool dude? It's really confusing when he flip-flops between the two.
Can't Francis just decide whether he's a scumfuck or a cool dude? It's really confusing when he flip-flops between the two.
I'm afraid it's rare to find someone you either 100% agree or disagree with on everything

Like shit I don't agree, but don't act surprised.
Here we go again

If we were judging the Pope on a 'how progressive is this person', he'd score pretty fucking low, but as far as Popes go, he's probably the most socially tolerant one ever.

Claiming that evolutionary theory had merit took balls of tungsten during his tenure.

It's only some of the Protestant branches that are really opposed to it.
Can't Francis just decide whether he's a scumfuck or a cool dude? He's a very modern guy.
Actually, if we're talking relative progressiveness, John Paul II was far more ballsy in that respect. Claiming that evolutionary theory had merit took balls of tungsten during his tenure.
He's definitely better than Benedict was, at the very least. I wasn't alive during John Paul II's tenure so I'm not an expert but I am aware that he was quite similar to Francis in terms of the things he said.
Catholicism generally accepts evolutionary theory though. But had to explain it in the bible as the six days of creation because nobody would've figured out what the fuck he was talking about.
Progressive popes? My homie Urban II was the OG of being progressive. Progressin' to call crusade against the Muslims.
Turkey is going to school an Argentine Pope who went through our decades of repression and instability? Hahahah, fuck off m8 Now, it's interesting how 0 fucks are given by the Turkish about what their government say. I can't imagine a situation where a foreign head of state calls the Junta's repression "Barbaric and genocide" and the local government answers back "You're wrong". I mean, there would be protests overnight and marches all around the country and people would be asking for their heads. The same goes for Germany. Imagine the gov saying "No the holocaust wasn't wrong" or something like that. They would go nuts overnight, too.
Its baffling that they still deny the genocide to this point. Its like If Germany denied the holocaust
