I always thought we were pretty lucky in the UK. Got 100mbps broadband with Virgin Media with unlimited data and competition elsewhere.
Better than the yanks with AT&T/Comcast/Verizon and data caps everywhere.
I just got 19Mb/s down 1Mb/s up connected to my place recently. That's quality when you consider that in most places in Australia only ADSL2+ is available.

Yeah, from all the stories I hear about how US internet sucks for the price they have to pay (which include datacaps) I'd say the UK is doing alright.
Virgin Media is even giving out free speed upgrades soon. I'm on 150Mbps (which I got as part of a free upgrade as well) and now it's going to put me to potentially 300Mbps for the same price. Which includes unlimited data.

It's great in cities, in rural areas it's kinda mediocre. I can get about 40/5, via FTTC, due to the line length. That's it. There is competition but they are all really reselling the Openreach offering so there is no way to get a faster speed. Really wish BT had rolled out FTTP more, and not FTTC, FTTC is not going to last and whilst the demand is lacking now, it'll surely exist in say 5 years time, probably less.

Yeah, if you're rural (Or in Scotland simply not in a major city) then you're quite fucked for your internet speeds.

Surely if you're going rural you should expect that sort of thing. 40/5 isn't too bad IMHO.
It's a trade-off you have to make. I for one could never do it.
And then you get we poor souls in Hull who are stuck with a single wired ISP (Karoo/KC) with the only alternate providers being wireless (no good for gaming).
As you can probably guess Karoo having a monopoly over the city (and many outlying villages) means they don't need to worry about giving any real concern for customers or their problems. And they do jack up prices insanely high.
I've been stuck behind a 13mbps down, 1mbps up connection with 750GB of monthly usage @ £46 per month since forever. Hopefully next year they will introduce fiber (dubbed "KC Lightstream") into my street, allowing me to pay a whopping £80 per month for 100mbps down, 10 up and (at last) unlimited bandwidth.
