Nothing of value was lost, the alpha was fucking dreadful. Maybe this time they'll actually make a CNC game instead of some pay2win "F2P" poopoo.
Command & Conquer did not feel like an actual CnC game. Dual resource system, base expansion and upgrades felt more like a blizzard RTS title.

Westwood is doing 360s in their grave right now, but since this game is now canned they can eventually rest again
B-but my friend in the alpha said it was pretty damn good And I was looking forward to at least trying it before outright hating it!
The Command & Conquer series has had fucking tragic ending. Everyone hated the aliens, then people reacted poorly to Red Alert 3's off-the-walls cartoon style, somewhere along the line Tiberium was cancelled, the fourth game we don't speak of was the biggest piece of [redacted] I've played, Tiberium Alliances was absolute shit and now we come to this. Generals 2, the most antipated game in all of it's history- it got renamed, reworked as a f2p title, reception was poor at best and then cancelled while still in god damn alpha. This is the actual ending for it. No studio, no title in the works. Original plot line finished, really no reason to go back to Red Alert. Generals 2 was a failure. RIP, Command & Conquer.
I think people expected far too much from this game, kinda like when CoH2 moved from the slower, turtle-friendly gameplay everyone got to know and love, and moved for more mobile gameplay rather than possibly static. I admit, I was one of those people and I disliked CoH2 a lot. After playing the game though, I can't say it's anything but fun, and it's definitely not a bad game. Basically, when people let the name of the game dictate its "quality" more than the game itself, I can see why the developers just opted to throw whatever progress they'd made out the window.

Being a CNC fan is suffering. I remember when CNC3 was first released and one of the community managers for a fansite was contemplating whether or not it should even get a subforum because of how different it was, plus at the time modding tools weren't even being considered by EA. And modding the vanilla files was nearly impossible too because everything was packed into manifest files (still don't know if someone figured out how to unpack them, but probably did). We've been jerked around so much by EA it's better not to expect anything at all than to hype yourself up and be severely disappointed. I'll admit Westwood wasn't the shining example of a company either; constant delays, tech that lagged behind the time. But they knew how to make a product in the end that had amazing story, interesting characters and fun gameplay, which is everything EA seems to miss as of late.

It was KW that was near impossible to mod for a very long time.
Mad props to EA for realizing how terrible of a decision turning Generals 2 into this was though
