• Chkdsk /r - Can it be safely stopped?

Title, I wanted to save stuff from my external hd as I'm afraid it may be dying and I was wondering if I could stop the chkdsk /r (via command prompt) safely. It hanged at 10% with 606 files of 98288 files processed. It has 1TB capacity and I used around 500 - 600 GBs.
Somehow it now made progress, 629, ugh.
the /R switch tells chkdsk to attempt to recover files. This process can take hours, days or even weeks. If there is nothing currently wrong with the drive, you shouldn't invoke the switch. If you think the drive is failing, it's probably the worst thing to do, since it can possibly put the drive over the edge and you lose everything before you get a chance to copy it.
Yeah I have nothing to worry about, it just finished right now and I'm amazed at how everything is working again. Just in case someone finds my thread on Google this took around three days in order to complete.
I would say you should look at the S.M.A.R.T. data to make sure the drive is fine, but USB2IDE adapters are generally dumb and don't support it.
