TV Tropes copy pasta
In the land of the dead, the shinigami Ryuk is bored out of his mind. Attempting to get some entertainment, he takes a Death Note (a death god's notebook — "note" is simply what the Japanese call notebooks) and drops it into the human world... where perfect student Light Yagami is steadily growing disgusted with the rest of the human race. One day, as he heads home from school, he finds a black notebook on the ground with the words "Death Note" written on its front. Thinking it's a joke, he takes it home anyway (translation: Old Grim chucks his clipboard at some kid to see what happens).
That afternoon, despite still thinking it's a joke, Light wants to give the Death Note a try. Seeing a news report about a criminal holding schoolchildren hostage, Light writes the criminal's name in the notebook. Forty seconds later, the man dies.
At first the powers of the Death Note terrify Light, but then it hits him: this is what he's been looking for all along. With it, he can turn the world into a better place, by weeding out the bad elements... or so he explains to Ryuk, as the shinigami has decided to keep a personal eye on the wielder of his Death Note.
But as he begins to put his plan into action, with Ryuk observing by his side, the sudden rash of criminal deaths — credited to "Kira", an Engrish pronunciation of "Killer" — has thrown INTERPOL into a frenzy. Given no choice, they accept the aid of the master detective L — a man with a mountain-sized sweet tooth, a bad case of insomnia, and an almost supernatural gift for deduction. And since nobody knows his real name, the Death Note won't work on him.
Thus they enter into a cat-and-mouse game — Light trying to find some way to dispose of L while scrambling to keep clinching proof that he is Kira just out of reach. As more Death Notes fall into the mix, and criminals keep dying by "Kira's" hand, it all serves to sum up Ryuk's assessment: "Humans are so interesting!"
Based on a manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, who are both currently working on Bakuman. Also has a series of Alternate Continuity live-action films based on, but somewhat different from, the original manga.
So yeah, it's an anime but it's seriously really damn good, with intelligent writing and plotting, good characters and nicely grey morality. It does have its flaws though; it kind of dips towards the end, and while the writing is incredibly well thought out and intelligent it doesn't come across as realistic, though that could just be the translation. What ever you do, do not watch this if you dislike xanatos gambits, because it is literally made out of them. There is also a series of Japanese film adaptations, which I haven't watched but apparently aren't as good, and rumours of an American adaptation which would be shit, especially with the proposed changes. Also don't watch it if you like violence and explosions; while it does get a bit shootier towards the end it is mostly a series about people writing things down, lying to each other and thinking.
Death Note is pretty awesome, but it gets ALOT worse after that certain plot twist.
Great show!
I really like it. I just hate how overrated it is.
This anime seriously was one of the best ive seen. Before you post anime hate here just go watch atleast 5 episodes or you are dumb.
It could use less exposition ("You see, what I planned to do here was...") and I don't like the art, but it was pretty good. Certainly better than a good deal of anime.
I really like it. I just hate how overrated it is.
The thing I don't like about it to do with that is how popular it is with emo/scene girls, many of whom sympathize with and support Light, even though he is a crazy sick bastard who murders probably thousands of people, regards himself as a god, and is generally a lying malicious wanker to just about everyone, but people like him because he looks sexy. I mean seriously guys, Light is not the hero!
Thats exactly why I don't like it. It's a good show, and really interesting. Just the fan-base is horrible.
Show is overrated, too many fan girls, although it's a nice idea, and worth a watch if you can distance yourself from the related culture or whatever. Hmmm, the things I would do if I had a Death Note.

Without the exposition it would just either a) not make any sense whatsoever or b) look like L was just constantly pulling stuff out of his ass (if you didn't get to hear the logic behind it) and Light would come across as a lot less intelligent if you couldn't see how well thought out his plans were. But yeah, I agree they could have been a bit more subtle about it.
I have watched a few of the episodes, but I didn't like it. I'm not saying it wasn't good, but anime isn't my thing. I like the story of it though.
I love this, got all the mangas.
In the anime I stopped watching after[sp] L died, because I found Near boring. I decided to stick through with it and it got awesome again! The car chase was so awesome.[/sp]

I'm actually scared of what I would do if I had a Death Note; I don't think I'm the sort of person that should be trusted with infinite power. Also Cypher could you spoiler tag that?
I remember watching this a few years back on Adult Swim. It was awesome.

Done, sorry.

I'm not saying I wouldn't turn into a deranged psyco, I'm just saying it would be an interesting ride.
Ryuk likes apples :3
It really is an absorbing show.
I drew a badass drawing of L for my girlfriend, I'll scan it tomorrow.

I didn't like the english dub all that much. One of those anime's that are good watching with subs. But sometimes the arguments that take place in the show go so fast to read it's better in English.
English dub? I cringe at the thought, the voice acting is so good in the japanese
DEaTH NOTO?*choking noise*?!! D:

But without the english dub we wouldn't have gotten this!

I normally hate anime, but Death Note was really good. It was definitely worth watching every minute of, in my opinion

I knew what it was before I watched it, but I still giggled.
The only anime that i really liked!
It was so damn clever.
I liked the dub. I've heard quite a bit of hate for Light's voice, I agree there was a bit of over-acting but it wasn't too bad in my opinion. L's voice just fit; yeah he sounds a bit like an alcoholic but that's what you get if you never sleep. Also without the dub we wouldn't have this line:

Most dramatic way to eat a potato chip ever.
