• Idea - Garry's mod on PS3

Before you jump the gun and call me a dumbass for wanting something like this, I would like to say that this is not a "Hurrrrr gerry plz port geemawd onto pee es thray cuz i likz it" thread. This is a legitimate idea. I know for a fact that Garry's Mod can be run on many linux distros through the use of wine. And the PS3 can run things like Ubuntu. (Running it right now.) So is it possible to run garrys mod through wine on a PS3 that runs Linux? And yes, I know that it would run like absolute crap compared to most modern computers because of the weird hardware issues that allow use of only about half the PS3's GDDR3 RAM. (221 MB I think it is). And the fact that Sony doesn't want us using their graphics cards from the PS3. But once (if) patches come out, will it be possible, or is there some impossibility that I'm overlooking?
-nvm reread-
you can't access the GPU in linux on the PS3.
No
the GDDR3 RAM is on the GPU, so you're locked out of that. you do have access to the Cell RAM, which is XDR, not GDDR3. 256MB XDR, to be exact. while XDR is fast, it's not fast enough for that.
The PS3 would need to emulate a pc capable of running Half life 2 Episode 2 somewhat smooth, if it's supposed to run Garrys mod. In short: never gonna happen.
It would be good, but I don't think it's gonna happen man..
Wrong architecture, Wine only simulates the system calls, it cannot translate code to different architectures. You would have a better chance asking ea to port it over for you.
Also, would Lua even run on PS3? This idea is so highly unlikely and has been asked so many times. No.
goes into the garrysmod section
goes into the garrysmod section
Hardly. Fits here just as well.
Also, would Lua even run on PS3? This idea is so highly unlikely and has been asked so many times. No.
Lua would, yes, as it's client related, not OS related.
I've ran the standalone Lua interpreter on PS3 before, so yeah that can be done. As someone mentioned though, WINE isn't an emulator and won't "translate" between architectures so you're out of luck.
Lua would, yes, as it's client related, not OS related.
Do you know that Lua runs on a Virtual Machine? It might not be likely as you think
WINE only works with x86 cpus, as does Garry's mod and all that jazz. The Cell is essentially a souped-up PPC. From what I understand, it was a difficult process in and of itself for Gearbox(if I have that right) to produce a Source engine port of HL2.
I remember old versions of Darwine which would emulate an x86 processor on a PPC Mac and then let WINE run with it :v:
Why would you even do that? Garrys mod would be horrible on the console. You wouldn't be able to play it nearly as well as on PC, plus, what about all of the buttons?

(And game developers can actually provide support for them in "real" PS3 games, not just Linux. See Unreal Tournament 3.)

Your title states "Idea" but in your post I only find questions.
Yeah, although I still don't think you'd get the right garry's mod experience. Think of how much a mess it'd be for addons. Eg. Wiremod, Phx.
Why would add-ons be a mess on the PS3? It has a harddrive, and it can hold save data up to 4GB file sizes.
Maybe its just me but this seems rather pointless to me. PS3+Ubuntu+Keyboard+mouse+Wine+Gmod, pretty much translates into the same concept as running Gmod on a PC. Why not just run it on a PC? With $400 you can build a decent pc from newegg, so why go through all this effort to play your PC games on a PS3? I get the whole linux on the PS3 thing, as people that like linux like to have it on their other devices as well (at least I do :), but why go to all that trouble to make the PS3 like a PC, only to run Gmod like shit? Just way beyond my sense of reason.
Why would add-ons be a mess on the PS3? It has a harddrive, and it can hold save data up to 4GB file sizes.
I mean getting them there and svn updates.
I mean getting them there and svn updates.
That wouldn't be a problem, but you can't exactly run performance-expensive games on Linux on PS3 and Sony wouldn't allow homebrew addons if they're coded, I suppose. Although you can play third-party UT3 maps on PS3 (I think).
Although you can play third-party UT3 maps on PS3 (I think).
You can.
You can connect a keyboard and mouse to a PS3, you know. (And game developers can actually provide support for them in "real" PS3 games, not just Linux. See Unreal Tournament 3.)
Yeah, so what is the advantage?
Yeah, so what is the advantage?
So you can play with PS3 duhh.
Do you know that Lua runs on a Virtual Machine? It might not be likely as you think
Lua's virtual machine is open source, and can therefore be compiled to run on any architecture you want. The reason you can't get Source Engine Games natively on the PS3 (unless EA ports them) is because no-one has access to the code. That's the only reason it wouldn't work. (Well, ignoring problems with RAM)
Yeah, although I still don't think you'd get the right garry's mod experience. Think of how much a mess it'd be for addons. Eg. Wiremod, Phx.
in that aspect it should all be the same, you'd just have to download the mods on PC (ie Unreal Tournament 3) [editline]11:07PM[/editline]
That wouldn't be a problem, but you can't exactly run performance-expensive games on Linux on PS3 and Sony wouldn't allow homebrew addons if they're coded, I suppose.
You can connect a keyboard and mouse to a PS3, you know.
Well what's the point of a console version then?
