I get that these companies need to make a profit, but I'd rather buy new cars through DLC than have the option of paying for what are essentially cheats. (I'd also buy tracks!)

I'm pretty sure if they released the game with only 400 cars and made the other 800 DLC only, that you would complain saying you'd rather have a game with 1200 cars and be able to buy credits to get them faster, than have to buy DLC to get the full 1200 cars.
You don't have to buy credits with real money to get every car in GT6 this way. If they did DLC for cars, you would have to shell out real money to acquire them, and then I'd assume you would also have to have enough in-game credits to access them anyways.
