It's now possible to play Nintendo games in 4K quality - but only if you run them through an emulator.
Cemu is a piece of "highly experimental software" that allows Wii U games to be emulated on PC. It's fairly demanding in terms of the rig you'll need to run - recommending 6GB RAM and only supporting 64bit processors - but it is also the only emulator that has cracked a current generation console. As of its latest release, it's also the only one that can technically outperform the hardware it's emulating, allowing for a 4K experience.

Cemu's latest release, v1.7.0 (which is currently only available to Patreon supporters), unlocks the potential of those games with the introduction of customisable 'graphics packs'. These allow players to adjust a game's anti-aliasing, shadow, and resolution settings, pushing them to 4K quality.

The public release for Cemu 1.7.0 and the graphics packs is set for January 16
When I watched the new Zelda gameplay I thought it seriously lacked some anti-aliasing. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing ends up running the game in 4K not long after release.

I didn't even know that a Wii U emulator existed. It looks like it runs pretty well for something so early in development.
How does it handle the gamepad?
How does it handle the gamepad?
I don't know of a way to see what the Gamepad renders in things like MarioKart 8, I believe the emulator always forces the game to think it's in tablet-only mode.

It's not surprising you didn't know, the emulator has been advancing like crazy, it's not even 16 months that it was made publicly available.

Holding tab switches to the gamepad screen.

Something about this line gets to me cause most emulators technically outperform the hardware they're emulating :v:

Yes, but usually it's not current gen hardware that is still being sold. They probably phrased it wrong.
Just think about it; the new Switch will run the game at 900p, and here we are talking about the possibility of 4K support of a Wii U version at launch. It's mind blowing just to think about it.

They also say...
It's now possible to play Nintendo games in 4K quality - but only if you run them through an emulator.
...Implying that it was impossible before despite the fact that it was totally possible in other emulators like Dolphin.
Don't forget the new zelda will also be releasing for the wii u chances are the emulator could run it by then. Pretty sick.
Source on 900p? I heard people at the event were told it was 1080@60
It depends on the game.

I read it on IGN:

Update:
Now IGN reports it is actually 1080p...

Update 2:
Now they claim there is no official confirmation it is 1080p...

That's not exactly accurate. The Wii U processor isn't based on the Wii processor or GCN processor and the Wii processor isn't based on the GameCube processor and etc.
What makes them all so similar is they all share a common ancestry with the PowerPC 750. Think of it like how humans don't come from apes but we share a common ancestor with apes.

The better point to make is that an emulator is much more than a CPU core.
Also, it is inaccurate to say that "the Wii processor isn't based on the GameCube processor". The Wii really is just an overclocked Gamecube, which is why Dolphin (a Gamecube emulator) supports it. The two systems even use the same exact video and sound hardware! The only major difference is that the Wii has some secondary processor (Starlet, I think), which, IIRC, controls access to certain hardware (like the USB ports). That secondary processor is what runs the various "IOS" modules that homebrew users are familiar with.
So is CEMU at a point now where you can have a 'real' playthrough of Mario, Windwaker, or Mario Kart 8 and have a seamless experience with low to no graphical/framerate issues? Like is it actually ready for normal consumption?
I might try this out to play Pikmin and finish my Windwaker playthrough. I have all the games that I haven't sold on yet, but recently sold my Wii U. Realised I goofed when I found out Switch isn't backwards compatible with Wii U games. Is there a way for me to rip the physical copies I have, or am I better off just getting what other people have done? I figure this isn't really Warez since I have the copies of the game myself.
There's also decaf, which is pretty cool and you can contribute to it, unlike cemu: https://github.com/decaf-emu/decaf-emu
Tried CEMU long time ago and it ran for shit (as expected). It has come a long as way, just tried the latest release and seemed to run great. First time through a level it stutters a lot creating the shaders but I think that might also be a thing of the past once 1.7.0 comes out and we can share the pre-generated shaders. This is awesome, games are completely playable.

well, i played mario maker on it with some really good framerate. However, the game slow down at 60 fps for no reason while it's pretty playable at 30fps.

Aiming for 1080p60.
Kind of annoying that the person in the video is an idiot, and the video is 30FPS. If the video was 60FPS, you might be able to spot it slacking off at 30FPS even though there's no heavy animation happening during the video.
Hey guys this is the perfect chance to play Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X in 4K. Both are fantastic games.

this is definitely a 1080p60fps.

also this is basically assassin's creed: mario edition
this is definitely a 1080p60fps
That's also a game made by Nintendo, masters of optimization and having games exclusive to their hardware.
I'd like to see a multiplat game running 1080/60.

Well that explains it. Also explains why it's not opensource.
Tried it out for the first time today, and SM3DW seems, like, actually playable. Been playing for only 20 minutes but haven't seen any obvious graphical glitches yet, performance is great (I do have a good system though)

With all that aliasing going on, even up close, I really wouldn't be so sure. It might be 900p, or have dynamic resolution and stuff like PS4 and Xbox games. Maybe Digital Foundry could do their thing, analyze the videos and count the pixels or something.

If someone could dig up and leak the original Xbox code I would greatly appreciate it. The Gamecube has great emulation and the PS2 is serviceable but there's nothing for the Xbox but a few prototypes.
It'd also be nice if the Dolphin devs could help out on PS2 emulators, though I understand that they can't do everything.

Yeah, now that I look at it in fulscreen you can definitely tell it's either upscaled or has abnormally low quality textures/meshes. But I'm VERY glad it's 60 fps. Ever since I got a non-shit gpu I get headaches from playing action games on any console, and I'm 90% sure it's from the terrible fps.
