Researchers at the Laboratory of Nanomagnetism and Spin Dynamics are working on a form of memory that will work 100,000 times faster than today’s hard drives. Not only are they faster, they are also far more efficient. Current computers take an average of 2-3 minutes to transfer information from the hard disk to the RAM. This new technology would allow for computers to boot up instantly and retrieve data 100,000 times more rapidly. In addition to lightning fast speeds it is also extremely efficient. RAM requires near constant electrical current, yet Racetrack memory does not have the same constraint. This could make it up to 300% more efficient, saving power and money.
Source: www.examiner.com/technology-in-tucson/racetrack-memory-will-make-computers-100-000-times-faster
Where do I pre-order?
sweet!
What's with all the awesome technological and scientific stuff going on lately?
Dibs on one. Or 8
Can't wait until it's finally released 40 years from now. :smith:
Current computers take an average of 2-3 minutes to transfer information from the hard disk to the RAM
When I first read that I was like "what?" but then I realized that they were talking about all of the information required to boot up the computer. Still that was badly worded.
cant wait to get my hands on one UNLIMITED POWEEEEEEEEEEEER!!!
Isn't it RAM speeds that's the latest bottleneck for faster computers nowadays? Not that I know, heard it from someone else.

Wonder if they could apply similar ideas to proccessors and graphics cards?
"New computer runs crysis on Ultra High at record setting 61 FPS."
It doesn't even take my dad's rather shite computer three minutes to boot up, so I have no idea where they got that from, but the idea of shit fast memory is obviously appealing. I'd imagine the 100,000x is the best possible outcome though.
This is of course made for guys who need to transfer their porn collection instantly.

If I could have that happen instantly it would be awsome.
Current computers take an average of 2-3 minutes to transfer information from the hard disk to the RAM.
What computer these days takes 3 minutes to boot up? Mine takes 50 seconds and that's without a SSD.
What's with all the awesome technological and scientific stuff going on lately?
Approaching technological singularity fuck yeah
From the title it sounds like a troll science comic.
Isn't it RAM speeds that's the latest bottleneck for faster computers nowadays? Not that I know, heard it from someone else.
no not even
Now for only the low low low price OF: - Selling all of your limbs - Selling your soul to Satan - Stealing Fort Knox - Killing the richest man alive, the president, Steve Jobs, and all of the scientists that would hoard this kind of technology for themselves.

This shit won't be available for at least 10 years.

Computers could be 100,000 times more expensive with racetrack memory!
Wow, i don't have a gamer pc, but i sure would like to have that. Every computer should have it.
What makes you guys think this is "HOLY SHIT BRAND NEW" technology and not "Damn , why didn't we think of that" technology. At least , I hope it's the latter.
Hey guys, it's another one of these awesome technologies that come in the near future which is never.
Even if it was released in a few years, it wouldn't become affordable until at least 5 years after it's release.
Doesn't even sound that complex.
Fucking hell. I chose a bad time to take computer science in university. Everything we are learning now will be completely obsolete inside 10 years.
