Partial remains of some victims of the 11 September attacks ended up in landfill, a Pentagon report has found.
Some small portions of unidentifiable remains from the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania field where a hijacked plane crashed in 2001 were given to a private contractor for disposal.
The US defence department report investigated practices at the military's Dover Port mortuary.
The fragments "could not be tested or identified," the review said.
The practice of putting partial unidentified remains in landfill was stopped in 2008.
US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said Gen Abizaid's report "highlights weaknesses in the overall command and oversight structure at the Dover Port Mortuary".
He promised "the families of our fallen heroes... that every step will be taken to protect the honour and respect that their loved ones richly deserve".

B-b-but private firms are so much more efficient than government run things!
may they rest in pieces
Who the hell would ever think that this was a good idea?
If it couldn't be identified then I suppose it really doesn't make much difference where it ends up. The graves of all those who died from 9/11 already exist so adding remains that are unidentifiable doesn't make sense - it's like finding a discarded chicken bone in the street and complaining at KFC for not putting it in the correct bin.
Why not, you know, put the remains in a casket and put it in a graveyard instead of putting them in a landfill? I'm only saying out of speculation that it could possibly be another 9/11 victim that was never found or identified.
See how fucked up that is? Oh no, human lives are nothing, let's just dump them like garbage
Shows how much they care really :downs:
Fallen heroes?
The title makes it sound worse than it really is. They were just charred and destroyed limbs/pieces of limbs. There wasn't much they could do with them. They could cremate them and have a pile of ashes from random people's limbs and put them in a jar or something for the memorial or museums but that would be kind of disrespectful in a way. Burying them in graves would either make it a mass grave of limbs which people wouldn't like, or make separate graves for each limb but the reality is it's just a grave with something saying "Here lies some random 9/11 victim's leg".
I wouldn't worry too much about the fate of those unidentifiable pieces, they did what they had to do and the people who died are still being honored properly.

Addressing the firefighters and other people who dealt with the situation.
Kid #1: Hey Billy, let's go to the landfill to pick out a tire that we can tie to the tree!
Kid#2: Great idea!

But they're unidentified 9/11 victims, maybe they are firefighters/etc. If not, though, then why are they heroes?
I kinda get how this could happen. You have to keep in mind they are talking about pulverized bodies. So it's mostly small bits and pieces among the debris.
What a shit job to recover human remains from that huge pile.
But the plane that flew to the pentagon was actually a missile...

So were the ones that hit the towers. In fact, the towers were also missile. And there never really was an Osama Bin Laden. He, too, was a missile.
It's partial. It's not like they've put whole human bodies in the recycling. It sucks, but it's thousands of tonnes of rubble.
I've seen the pictures. The article makes it sound like keeping them or burying a piece of charred, unidentifiable flesh half and inch big would have been a reasonable solution.

That's correct but we're not talking about the WTC aspect, these are remains from the pentagon and Pennsylvania crashes. They did try though, when rubble arrived at the Fresh Kill Landfill they had a system where the debris was shifted through on a belt by people and possible human remains were removed but it really was a huge field of rubble that came in and pieces probably were missed since they were extremely small and easily mistaken for random bits of just.. stuff that was in the collapse.
To be fair though they actually recovered largely intact corpses and remains from the Pentagon as opposed to WTC and the PA Crash where remains were torn apart or pulverized.

What ITokez said.
Not to mention the landfills are in the middle of no where and restricted. Kids wouldn't just show up.
1/10 not immersed in your story. Would not read again.

Well you could say they hurled the plane at those towers, so by definition, yes the plane was a missile.

Sounds like the intro to a CSI episode.
I can't imagine it would be easy to distinguish dirty dusty smashed up pieces of people from dirty dusty smashed up pieces of building and office furniture. I'm sure they did the best that they could but they're not going to spend an inordinate amount of time categorising rubble.
finding an arm in the rubble of the twin towers is like a needle in a haystack
finding an arm in the rubble of the twin towers is like a needle in a haystack
Well especially because now its probably not anything
finding an arm in the rubble of the twin towers is like a needle in a haystack
More like if you took several different brand bottles of sprinkles, emptied them into a hay stack and than mixed it up thoroughly and asked to find and identify which brand of sprinkle it was when and if you find any.
We're not talking about limbs. We're talking about fragments of people.
Larger remains like the rare legs and arms and such were usually found during the shifting and sorting process but finding pieces of people that big were really rare.
