As a ganglion cyst (also known as a bible bump) is a swelling that often appears on or around joints and tendons in the hand or foot. The size of the cyst can vary over time. It is most frequently located around the wrist and on the fingers. The term "Bible Bump" comes from a common urban legend that treatment by pounding on the cyst with a Bible or another large book occurred in the past.
So, basically, a ganglion cyst appears the liquid used to lube your joints escapes a little, because of a small rupture. The liquid solidifies, making a cyst. This normally happens on the back of your hands, feet or fingers.
So Ive been diagnosed with one of this in the back of my right hand, a month ago. Now, I'm sitting here in front of the computer with a my hand tied up in bandages and post operation pain (thankfully, the pain meds are kicking in now)
So, i bet you guessed by now. The treatment is surgery. Yesterday, I was laying down on an surgery bed, given local anesthesia, and the plastic surgeon proceeded to make a small incision, used some instrument to push my skin and tendons so we could work at peace. With a Garrot in my arm, there was almost no blood. He then cutted some layers of skin where the cyst was glued to, and finally taken off. The surgeon then used Electrocautery (an electric instrument that creates heat, to burn small vessels, in order to stop the bleeding. Then he stitched the hand from the inside, in order to leave a small scar.
No, i couldn't man up to see them doing the surgery, since there was a curtain that didn't let me see my arm. I wouln't want to see it anyways, since I was scared like hell. However, my mother is a nurse and was allowed in, and then explained the surgery to me.
Now, it was scary. Yep. Ive never done a surgery before. I had to put on those silly plastic robes, and the doctor placed endless sheets of plastic and god knows what on top of my hand. It looked like a god damn movie.
Oh, and the pain. I felt the needle going in my hand to injected the anesthesia, after that i didn't fell much more. Just some ocasional spot here and there that gave me some pain, but the surgeon injected more anesthesia each time I complained. 4 locals, including the initial one.
After that, I went to bed with no pain at all, since the anesthesia was still in effect. I woke in middle of the night with some pain,, but i fell asleep again. At seven am the anesthesia completely wore off, and now I'm taking some powerful pain meds. I took them an hour ago, however, i still feel some horrible pain.
So, for at least 2 weeks, i wont be able to do much more with my right hand than well... nothing.(kinda boring since I'm right handed) So its 2 weeks off skipping tests and left hand writing!
For people out there that have been thru the same, or are getting surgery too, post so i can rate hearth. Its in fact, very common.
Pics of the hand in question (ill post pre and post surgery pics later):

That actually happend a few times, by accident. It shrinks and eventually grows again.
Wikipedia says they used to cure it that way back in the good times.
I have one, I'm going to the hospital to get it removed next month, can't wait cos it sticks out like a motherfucker

The doctor told me the same. It sometimes does, some times doesnt. Most times just reappears, so thats why surgery. But with surgery, theres still a 10 % chance of coming back. I dont really wanna think about it.
I had a different kind of cyst above my eye since I was born. Had surgery to remove it last week.
I had an ingrown toenail removed. both sides on same nail were taken out.
It was a similar situation to yours.
Rated bad spelling, then realized you had to type it out with one hand and changed it to a
I thought only women could get cysts
in their vaginas
I have one in my foot, it's unpleasant but it doesn't cause pain so I'm just leaving it. Sometimes it goes away only to come back.

I'm still wondering where the name ganglion comes from. Does it feels like getting mauled by a gang of lions if you have one of those cysts?

lol, you don't even feel it at all unless you press your other hand against it, even then it isn't sore
I've got a small one on my thumb. It's been there since I was 9. It's never given me any problems, though.
It's barely even noticeable.
Bah! that's not pain having your liver ripped in half is pain.

On a more related note, that sucks/is disgusting. Get better for your sake and our sakes.
Speaking of Cysts, my sister just got a Complex Ovarian Cyst not too long ago.

Use the left hand
I have one to the right of my tailbone. They lanced it when it got infected but I still need to get it surgically removed. Not sure when though since it isn't causing me too much grief anymore.
I remember seeing a guy who had three huge cysts; one on each wrist and one on the back of his neck.
