I should start by saying I'm technically inept so bear with me. Ive had this rig for 4 years and its served me well Quad Core, 4gb of RAM and a high end graphics card, a year or two ago it started playing up, i was playing Just Cause 2 and it just shut off, not shut down or crashed, the power just went and i couldn't turn it on for about 10 minutes, this was the first time it happened so i decided to ignore it at the time as a 'one off'. It started getting worse, the frequency in which it kept shutting off in this way got more and more until i could hardly open i tunes without it shutting off. I tried everything thing i could think of to try and solve this problem (considering i am shit with anything technical) i thought it might be an overheating problem so i cleaned out the whole case of any dust and made sure all the fans were fine. Didn't work. Tried virus scans. Didn't work. Someone suggested that i try taking a look at the CPU to check everything was clean there and that my thermal paste hadn't evaporated, so i replaced the thermal paste and what do you know? Didn't work. I gave in and let some IT technicians look at it, they seemed to think the problem was my cpu wasn't 'Slotted in properly' and assured me everything would work perfectly now. It actually worked fine for a while i booted up spotify and decided to install Crysis....Holy shit, as soon as it got to the intro cinematic the pc just started howling! the fans were spinning furiously, there was a horrible electrical crackling sound and eventually a subtle scent of burning plastic AAAAND it shut off again. I'm at a loss, i have a feeling leaving the CPU not properly inserted or whatever might have damaged it for good. Facepunch, what do you think? TELL ME WHAT TO DO! :(
Sounds like either you PSU or motherboard is defect.
This awfully sounds like a faulty PSU (power supply) or motherboard. Do not switch on or continue to use your PC until the problem has been identified and fixed. If the computer is a prebuilt then give us the model number of it so we can identify the motherboard and other components.
If you take a look inside, look and see if you can find anything that looks burnt or something.
Its a custom rig from MESH. But i might take a few pictures now. The PSU specs: HEC-550TD-PTE AC INPUT: 230Vac 50hz 7A And there's nothing burnt, thankfully.

I highly recommend to unplug the computer and not switch it on. I so far strongly suspect it's a power supply failure so you should do a paper clip test as the first step. http://dodji.seketeli.com/downloads/shuttle-psu-paper-clip-test.pdf If it it fails then you need to replace the PSU, or RMA if you're under any warranty. Also I'd really like to meet the guy that told you it was because of an improper CPU placement. Biggest nonsense I've personally heard in a while.
Think im buying a new pc, probably for the best.
In that case I don't recommend to buy prebuilts and instead buy yourself the individual parts thus saving costs for higher quality components that caters to your needs. Building a computer is like lego in its simplest form. You can go here for advice either way: http://www.facepunch.com/forums/243 You should list your budget and what you plan to do with your computer.
HEC is a SUPER shit brand of PSU, they can't even operate at half of their rated load without burning/exploding. They also use shit components, which can cause damage to everything else in your system. DO NOT continue powering on the system until you get a new PSU. I recommend a Thermaltake, SilverStone, Cooler Master or Corsair PSUs.
