I need help with my problem. My computer shuts down after a while. It first happened when I installed a fan to my chassis, so I took it off. After it worked fine. Today I had to reapply thermal paste. Now it usually shuts down about minute after startup.
Although I think it won't do that when I put turned it on it's side. Not sure if this is relevant to the problem, it just hasn't shut down when I keep it this way.
Does anyone know what might cause the problem?
I suspect something wrong in my PSU
My specs:
Antec 500W PSU
Intel i5 750 2,66ghz quadcore
Nvidia 8600GTS 512mb
Asus motherboard (P7P55 LX, LGA1156, P55, DDR3, CrossFireX, ATX)
4GB Dual Kit Ripjaws DDR3-1333 F3-10666CL9D-4GBRL 9-9-9-24
Windows 7 64bit
Sounds like either:
You didn't properly apply the thermal paste, or
You didn't securely fasten the heatsink.
If you didn't securely fasten the heatsink, then it wouldn't make full contact when your machine is upright because of gravity pulling down on it.
You're gonna die.

That could be it. Is it supposed to shut down if it isn't fastened securely?
I'll try that anyway, thanks

It's shutting down because it's overheating. It's overheating because the heatsink likely isn't attached properly, or you screwed up the thermal compound.

It shuts down when it reaches a high temperature; it is a safe-guard so that the CPU doesn't get fried.
If the heatsink isn't fastened down all the way, the heat produced by the CPU isn't transferred fully to the heatsink.
I feel like an idiot now. That fixed it. Thanks!
