• Some 'pink' products do little for cancer research
Among products purported to support breast cancer research and awareness, the marketplace seems to know no bounds. "Pink" products or those displaying the pink ribbon range from bags of chicken feed to containers for eggs. Even the National Football League is putting on the pink, partnering with the American Cancer Society and selling gear and apparel to benefit the cause. But not all pink products benefit breast cancer equally. Thus was hatched the term "pinkwashing," to describe the practice of profiting from pink products with little or no donation to the cause. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month ends Sunday, but pink items and those bearing the recognizable pink ribbon won't be gone from store shelves anytime soon. Are some of them a sham? Yes, said Khaled Aboulnasr, associate professor of marketing at Florida Gulf Coast University. Some businesses take advantage of consumers' concern about breast cancer, Aboulnasr said, "when in reality they are taking very vague steps to support the cause or being unclear about the amount of money they are actually donating to breast cancer charities." The Susan G. Komen Foundation, which partners with more than 200 companies, has raised $1.5 billion through products and donations since it began in 1982. It began using the pink ribbon at its New York City Race for the Cure in 1991. Not everyone can use the Komen logo or name, said Miriam Ross, executive director of the local affiliate. "As an organization dedicated to health, Komen for the Cure is picky about our partners," said a company statement. It does not partner with any company that is not transparent about how much money is going to breast cancer research. Associating with pinkwashers could erode the public's confidence in Komen and other legitimate foundations. "The success of 'cause-related marketing' programs to a large extent depends on the degree of trust consumers have in these companies," Aboulnasr said. Some companies do no more than claim to raise "awareness." It's a malignant twist on cause marketing. Kelly Ann Packard of Fort Myers shows the kind of passion it taps into. She has everything from a pink can opener to a pink Publix bag and a pink blow dryer. "Usually I will only buy the pink version of a product I already intended to buy," Packard said. "But sometimes the marketing is so strong that I will buy yet another pink spatula or something else I really don't need ... to feel like I am making a difference." Other buyers are a harder sell. Carol Conrath of Fort Myers wonders why all the attention on breast cancer. "There are other women's cancers," she said. "Retailers jump onto the pink bandwagon to increase their sales for selfish reasons." Ana Waleri of Naples has been treated for breast cancer and she is happy to purchase pink. "But I do have a requirement," Waleri said. "I check them very carefully and make sure they are listing a legitimate organization." If the product lists breastcancerresearch.org, Bosom Buddies or the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Waleri is satisfied. "Anybody can slap a pink ribbon on something and not really support breast cancer research," Waleri said.
Source: http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2010-10-31-pinkwashing_N.htm Wow, some companies are fucking taking advantage of the whole 'pink' products; at times faking it, for pure income instead of part going cancer donations. * for shame
I miss my mum :(
did she die from cancer son
nah shes just gone shop
I thought this was obvious? Buying stickers and buying and wearing and showing support through pink shit does jack all. The people in control of the charity groups and breast cancer groups have bitched about this for a while, they're tired of people just buying pink shit and not helping the cause at all. Breast cancer awareness is at an all time high, but it's not like more money is pouring in than before. It's due to this "wear pink, feel good" thing.
Greed is gonna kill us all.

As if pink really had anything to do with cancer awareness.
I fucking hate all this tit cancer shit, they should just walk for cancer. You don't see hordes of men jogging down the street in one color running for testicular cancer. It's arrogant pretending it's different from any other type of cancer. I believe it's because women are secretly plotting for world domination and to achieve so they need intact tits to distract us men.
Same thing happens with "green" products

I was diagnosed with it a month ago, luckily it wasn't the deadly kind.
Why is breast cancer such a big deal what about lung or prostate cancer those are more important.
We already knew this.

Isn't there laws against this?
