I think it's a very important aspect of game development to get the right length for a game. I think the Souls games are a perfect example of this. They provide a lengthy experience on your first playthrough. Afterwards once you want to experiment with builds or various gameplay elements, you can quickly play through a game because the design encourages experimentation.
Although I'm glad that games like Witcher are lengthy and provide so much more content. It's important to get the amount of content right in a game, bloating a game up with tons of contents can be quite awful if it is done in a bad way.
I'm starting to intentionally skip content to beat games. I did it in Fallout 4 and I'm doing it with Dragon Age. I don't have time to complete a bunch of side quests for these things when I work 40 hours a week.
I get uneasy whenever I see games boasting "100 HOURS OF GAME PLAY" now. It excited me when I was on summer break from school but not so much now.
That's pretty much how it is for me too. In high school and college I was like, sweet, more game for my money! Now I'm sitting on Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and MGS V with half to 3/4 completion on all of them since I don't have time to get immersed in them anymore. Still worth the money, but I'll probably be finishing them over the course of a year or so.
I think the thing is a lot of games love to bloat with content that isn't really appealing or in some cases is boring, a lot of side quests and minigames fall under this. Take those out and you are left with possibly a 10 to 20 hour experience instead of 100.
Back then it didn't seem to happen as much, or at least our younger minds could easily get distracted and end up liking certain things we don't like today.
Witcher 3 took me almost a month to finish and I played it every day for a 4 or 5 hours. It's a great fucking game.
