Surely we could get a 3D game in the style of the Gamecube games already
possibly with more open areas
It'd be cool to have a 3D Pokemon game on the Wii U.
The tablet could be used to manage your bag items, Pokemon, and it could even be used to display a map of the area or something.
The real reason: half a thousand pokemon models with dozens of attack animations each. Not going to work without cutting corners and looking as cheap as Pokemon Stadium.
The animated sprites are pretty much what makes the Pokemon game themselves. There's no need to go 3D. As it is they should have already at least moved onto the 3DS by now.
They can still do 3D while doing 2D sprites, it's called parallax. Just have your pokemon sprite appearing closer and the other one appearing further away, no 3D models required. Same with moving around the world, I mean it's already semi-isometric now, they just need to 3D-ify it.

Pokemon coliseum looked good though.

Wouldn't that mean having to make more sprites to account for different perspectives.

Yeah it was decent looking.
What bugged me was the lack of actually catching pokemon in the wild and the fact that you essentially fast traveled everywhere. That's where the corners really got cut.

I'm pretty sure they already do this in Black and White.

Fuck you, pokemon stadium is the best game ever
If we were able to take that style we have now and have it translate into 3D with no problems; that is definitely something we would be into.
Not saying it's a bad game (although it lacked in content), but it looked pretty cheap. Animations and sounds were repeated all over the place.
I know what he's saying; the main Pokemon RPG series definitely has a certain style to it that really only works in 2D. It's not the pixelization - it's the art style in general. Honestly, Black and White was about as 3D as I wanted the main series to get. Battles might work out in 3D, as they already have on the console games, but for everything else I'd much prefer the game to remain in 2D. I don't see why everyone wants it to go total 3D; there's nothing Pokemon stands to gain from that other than looking ~next-gen~.

They'd technically be the same sprites, but in 3D space, so the hardware/engine would be doing all the scaling work.
Zekrom is way cooler than reshiram
We've got 3D animated models from the Pokédex 3D being used in the new Mystery Dungeons game, so there may be hope yet for the next Gen moving beyond Sprites:

I want a pokemon fighting game in the style of super smash bro.
I'd like a really elaborate game that gives the Pokemon their own AI that they fight with, and with you playing as the trainer you only make suggestions. Obviously they would listen, but it wouldn't be immediate. Attacks like scratch and etc. they'd obviously do on their own when they could, but you could tell them to use thunder to engage or something.
They could get really elaborate and reintroduce a stronger obey system while also giving incentive to the player to "train" their pokemon.
How about they change their artstyle rather than switch to 3D?
Who wouldn't want a Pokemon game that looks like this:

That looks great, actually. Sometimes, I wish I could just go to those developers and say: "This. This is what I'ld like you to do."

parallax wouldn't require more than one sprite. it would be a single sprite rendered on a plane with two different cameras, one for each eye. perspective does the rest for you.

How much of that will they be able to fit on the actual screens though?
How much of that will they be able to fit on the actual screens though?
3ds resolution is 400(actually 800 considering the second camera) x 240. taking just those pics they'd get cropped a bit but not too badly.
i would never want a pokemon game in that style because it literally looks nothing like a pokemon game and more like a generic rpg that happens to have pokemon characters.

I wouldn't mind that sort of artstyle but I would definitely dislike how little area it lets you see around you

Not sure if its just me but they seem a little big, the art style looks nice but it just doesn't seem right
Listen here guys, this is the plan.
Gamefreak needs to expand. They have to make a spin-off that is not a spin-off. Another main series. With Pokemon. The old series can keep the style of the old one, while the new starts experimenting. However the elements of catching, battling, leveling and evolving remain.

I'm not sure why that's even an issue considering that the battle sprites remained more or less static until like, the DS.
