:siren: Pee-Wee's Playhouse! :siren: ------------------------------------ The Show: Pee-wee's Playhouse is an American children's telivision program starring Paul Reubens as the child-like Pee-wee Herman. The show was developed from Reubens' popular stage show and the one-off TV special The Pee-Wee Herman Show produced for HBO, which was similar in style but featured much more "adult" humor. The Plot: The premise of the show was that host Pee-wee Herman went to play in a fantastic house (situated in Puppetland) known as the Playhouse, which was filled with toys, gadgets, talking furniture and appliances (e.g. Magic Screen and Chairy) and puppet characters such as Conky The Robot, Pterry the baby pterodactyl and Jambi the Genie (John Paragon), a disembodied genie's head who lives in a jewelled box. The Playhouse was also visited by a regular cast of human characters including Miss Yvonne (Lynne Marie Stewart), Reba The Mail Lady (S. Epatha Merkerson), Captain Carl (Phil Hartman), Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne) and a small group of children, The Playhouse Gang. Additional Info: Although primarily a live-action show, each episode included segments featuring puppetry, video animation and prepared sequences using Chroma-key and stock footage (e.g. when Pee-wee jumps into the Magic Screen) as well as inserted clay animation sequences (some made by Peter Lord and Nick Park, creators of Wallace & Gromit) and excerpts from cartoons from the "Golden Age of American animation", usually presented by the character "The King of Cartoons". Each episode also featured specially written soundtrack music by noted rock/pop musicians such as Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Todd Rundgren, Mitchell Froom and The Residents. The show's theme song was performed by Cyndi Lauper, although she is credited under the pseudonym "Ellen Shaw". Each episode usually contained a running gag particular to that episode, and/or a specific event or dilemma that would send Pee-wee into an emotional frenzy. The show had many recurring gags, themes, and devices – for example at the beginning of each episode, viewers were told the day's "secret word" (often issued by Conky the Robot) and were instructed to "scream real loud" every time a character on the show said the word. This always bookended at the end of each episode with Pee Wee accidentally saying the word himself just before he leaves the playhouse. CBS and Reubens mutually agreed to end the show in 1991 after 5 seasons and 45 episodes. In July 1991, Reubens was arrested for allegedly exposing himself in a Sarasota, Florida adult movie theater, causing CBS to immediately stop airing Playhouse re-runs. ------------------------------------ Characters: Pee-Wee Herman Pee-wee is the show's main character and is commonly portrayed like an impatient and fun-loving child with dainty, effeminate mannerisms and quirky facial expressions. Cowboy Curtis An African-American "cowboy" in the 1950s pop culture sense. He also has his hair in a jheri curl mullet. Miss Yvonne A woman obsessed with beauty and cosmetics, who often flirted with Pee-wee and many of the other male characters on the show. She was given the title "the most beautiful woman in Puppetland" by the puppet characters. Captain Carl A gritty, unshaven sea captain with a gruff voice, but a somewhat shy demeanor. He came by the playhouse to show Pee-Wee interesting things from the ocean. Reba the Mail Lady An African-American female mail carrier who was often confused by the rules of the playhouse; over time, she gets really annoyed at having to be screamed at in her ears. The King of Cartoons He showed a brief cartoon during his segment. His catch phrase was "Let the cartoon begin!" The King of Cartoons used a film projector to show the cartoons. ------------------------------------ Puppet and object characters Now since there's a fuckton of these characters I'm only going to list a few iconic ones. Jambie A blue-faced (later green) genie who lived in a jeweled box. Usually appeared once per show to grant Pee-wee a wish, often with unexpected results. He would chant " Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho " to grant the wish. Chairy A bluish-green armchair with eyes on the chair back, a mouth between the seat cushions, and armrests that flapped around and occasionally hugged Pee-wee when he sat on her. Globey A spinning globe with a pair of arms at the base and a large face in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Globey spoke with a non-specific European accent and would often help Pee-wee out with geography, language, astronomy, or history questions. Puppet Band Three animal puppets who comprise a 1950s-style jazz combo, who live in a corridor of the Playhouse designed to resemble an alley. They normally spoke in rhyme, parodying Beat Generation poetry. Conky The playhouse robot, who gave Pee-wee the "secret word" each week and served as a "brain" element in the show. He spoke with a stutter, and was made from various parts of old electronics, including an old camera attachments (eyes), a boombox (chest), phonograph (torso), and a typewriter with no keys (head) and a Vacuum Cleaner Hood as the top skull. ( Believe it or not I couldn't find a picture of him after searching forever, so here's my interpretation of him. ) Floory A section of the playhouse floor that stood up and talked. For the first season he was covered by Pee-wee's tepee, but after Pee-wee and his friends remodeled the playhouse, he emerged. I suppose that covers enough of the main recurring characters, so let's move on! ------------------------------------ Recurring Gags, Themes and Routines: Secret Word: At the beginning of each show, viewers were told the day's "Secret Word" and were instructed to "scream real loud" every time a character on the show said the word, which was given to Pee-wee by Conky. Connect the Dots: Most episodes would involve Pee-wee leaping into Magic Screen, tossing a number of dots from his pocket, and playing a connect-the-dots game with them, accompanied by his singing "Connect the dots – laa la laa la laa" several times. "Marry It" Joke: Pee-wee or another character would say that he or she loved something, to which someone else would reply, "Then why don't you marry me/him/her/it?". In the "Pajama Party" episode, Pee-wee finally did marry a bowl of fruit salad in a formal ceremony. ------------------------------------ Additional Pee-Wee Herman Movies: Primetime Special: Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special It's the wildest holiday ever when some V.I.P.'s stop by to wish Pee-wee a V.M.C. (Very Merry Christmas)! Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon are off the beach and on Pee-wee's floor making Christmas cards, Magic Johnson joins Pee-wee for a wild sleigh ride in the Magic Screen, and Dinah Shore sings the "12 Days (or so) of Christmas!" Joan Rivers, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg wish Pee-wee a merry Christmas and a happy new "year." Pee-wee shows Little Richard how to ice skate, and Charo, k.d. lang, the Del Rubio Triplets, and Grace Jones perform fun yuletide carols! However, Pee-wee's got a problem larger than his mounting fruitcake collection when perhaps the M.I.P. (Most Important Person), Santa Claus, drops by to tell him that his Christmas wish list is just too long, and no one else will get presents if he doesn't shorten it! Will he keep the gifts, or will he help Santa deliver? Pee-Wee's Big Adventure: Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is a 1985 American adventure comedy film directed by Tim Burton in his full-length debut and starring Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman. Reubens also co-wrote the script with Phil Hartman and Michael Warhol. Supporting roles are played by Elizabeth Daily, Mark Holton, Diane Salinger and Judd Omen. Pee-wee's Big Adventure tells the story of Pee-wee Herman embarking on nation-wide adventure in search of his stolen bicycle. Pee-wee Herman loves his bike more than anything else in the world and refuses to sell it to spoiled neighbor Francis Buxton. The bike is stolen while he was visiting Dottie, resulting in Pee-wee visiting a psychic named Madame Ruby who lies and tells him that the bike is hidden in the basement of the Alamo Mission in San Antonio, Texas. On the way there, he meets Simone, a waitress with a yearning to see Paris. Her jealous boyfriend Andy thinks Pee-wee and Simone are romantically linked, and causes Pee-wee to flee in a boxcar of a moving train. Making it to San Antonio, he finds that the Alamo has no basement. Disappointed, Pee-wee visits a bar to use the telephone, but disturbs a biker gang after accidentally knocking over their motorcycles. Fearing they are going to kill him, Pee-wee asks for one last request and dances to "Tequila", winning the respect of the bikers. The bikers give him a motorcycle, but Pee-wee quickly crashes it, ending up in the hospital. There, he learns that his bike now belongs to Kevin Morton, a child star who is currently filming a movie with the bike as a prominent plot device. My opinion on this movie is that it's fucking great and you should see it at least once in your life, it's easily a classic full of hilarious moments and great comical adventure. Big Top Pee-Wee: Big Top Pee-Wee is the 1988 family comedy sequel to the 1985 film, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and stars Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman. The original music score is composed by Danny Elfman. The film is marketed with the tagline "Hero. Lover. Legend." This film begins with Pee-Wee Herman having a dream of being a famous singer in front of screaming fans. He makes his exit by disguising himself as Abraham Lincoln. One of the fans asks him for his autograph, but the phony beard slips off his face. They chase after him and he flies off to his ranch. Pee-wee finally awakens from his dream that morning to work on his farm with Vance the pig. Later, he has lunch with his fiancée, school teacher Winnie Johnson. Next, he races Vance to a general store owned by Mr. Ryan to order a cheese sandwich with a pickle. The sheriff warns everyone of a big storm approaching town. After the storm ends, Pee-wee emerges from his storm shelter to discover that an entire travelling circus has been blown into his backyard. Befriended by Cabrini Circus manager Mace Montana, Pee-wee is hoping to impress Gina Piccolapupula, a trapeze artist and the circus' star attraction, thereby incurring the jealousy of his Winnie until she meets Gina's older brothers: The Piccolapupula Brothers. Gina leaves Pee-wee when she finds out about Winnie, but later returns to him when she realizes that Pee-wee actually loves her. Pee-wee wants to join the circus, but all of his attempts to do so fail badly. Gina then tells Pee-wee about her late father, Papa Piccolapupula, who was a famous aerialist who suffered a fall performing the Spiral of Death, and that Pee-wee should try walking the tightrope in his honor. ------------------------------------ Media: The Theme Song: Big Adventure Trailer: Big Top Trailer: Drug PSA: The Breakfast Machine Tequila: ------------------------------------ Sources: Info shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia, pictures acquired from Google Images. ------------------------------------ I know you are, but what am I? :firstpost: Nice thread, by the way. (saying this so I don't get banned for saying "first post" lol)
Okay, no lie, Pee Wee's Big Adventure is one of my favorite movies. The comedy is, for some reason, hilarious to me. I think most of it stems from the fact that this is a grown man acting so immature. I love every scene and every line, it's great. And it's got a great film team. It was Danny Elfman's first film score, and the first movie Tim Burton ever directed, too!

Is Big Top Pee-Wee any good?
Is Big Top Pee-Wee any good?
It's pretty good but Big Adventure is definitely better. In Big Top it's still the same old Pee-Wee and his crazy antics, only he lives on a farm with tons of animals including a talking pig.
