http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8389896.stm
Newspaper publishers will now be able to set a limit on the number of free news articles people can read through Google, the company has announced. The concession follows claims from some media companies that the search engine is profiting from online news pages. Under the First Click Free programme, publishers can now prevent unrestricted access to subscription websites.
:suicide:

The internet is getting worse. I bet , within a few years , even google will be a subscription service.
The internet is getting worse. I bet , within a few years , even google will be a subscription service.
I doubt that
Er, it says that it's restricting access to not free news. And that it's the news site itself that will restrict the access. I see no problem.
Someone should tell Murdoch about robots.txt, would save a lot of pissing about.
Another service will rise up.
Just to be clear, it's not Google who's the bad guys here.
They're still going through with it.
The internet is getting worse. I bet , within a few years , even google will be a subscription service.
Why is that? They already make cash hand over fist with their "free" service, why would they need to make it a subscription service? I personally don't see a problem, it's restricting access to news from subscription sites, not from free sources.
I doubt they have choice.
Yea if they didn't comply there could be a nice lawsuit for them.
Oh Google, why hast thou forsaken me?
Guys, so what? I use yahoo for free news, and google for everything else. Try it and see what happens.
Why not just use BBC, CNN etc?
If news are not available for free, it's not important news.
They're still going through with it.
Well, so much for their "do no evil" policy. Every corporation goes bad eventually, no matter how awesome they may seem.
The internet is getting worse. I bet , within a few years , even google will be a subscription service.
Anything the public has access to for free, or cheaply, gets ruined, its only a matter of time
Guys, these sites are supposed to be subscription services in the first place. You're not supposed to read them for free. Google searches were bypassing needing to have a subscription. And if you actually read the article, it says you will still be able to read five articles a day via Google for free before being redirected to a subscription sign-up page on the sixth click. They basically just let subscription-based news publishers place kind of a daily trial system on their sites. Chill out.

When I first saw the title the part of my brain that constantly thinks the end is nigh flared up, but it's just news companies getting the money for the articles they were charging people for all along.
Oh hey look, Google's monopoly is starting to affect us negatively. Who would have known!
Oh hey look, Google's monopoly is starting to affect us negatively. Who would have known!
Look two posts up.
The sooner Rupert Murdoch dies, the better.
Guys, these sites are supposed to be subscription services in the first place. You're not supposed to read them for free. I also see no problem with restricting the ability to view subscription news.
Oh hey look, Google's monopoly is starting to affect us negatively. Who would have known!
Yeah man. God forbid we no longer have access to google's cached versions of subscription services.
Want to charge us Google? Goodbye then. www.bing.com www.ask.com www.yahoo.com Whoever rated me Bad Reading must have Bad Reading too. Read the fucking article. at the Bottom
It has also revealed plans to begin charging for access to all its online content.

The internet is getting worse. I bet , within a few years , even google will be a subscription service.
I would still pay for it. That is, unless it was something super high, like $30 a month.
The internet doesn't technically exist anyway, so therefore you cannot pay for something that doesn't exist.

Read the fucking article. at the Bottom
Guess what! What it says at the bottom is for the subscription sites, and it means that instead of getting five free views, it's no free views. Have a box to put your books in.
The internet doesn't technically exist anyway, so therefore you cannot pay for something that doesn't exist.
Try arguing that to your ISP, see where it goes.
The internet is getting worse. I bet , within a few years , even google will be a subscription service.
I want my I want my I want my FUCKING ALTA VISTA BACK
