How many of you have heard of the occupational safety and health administration? You may well have if you've been doing a job on a construction site, and had to adhere to their guidelines. But did you know that their site hosts weekly summaries of the (often hilarious) ways to die on a construction site, along with some informative diagrams? Here's a few of my favourites: Accidentally left bullet penetration perk on while operating a nailgun. Giving each other rides in the diggers when they should be working. Digging too deep and too greedily, releasing a creature of shadow and flame. Attempting the pole vault near power lines. Then we have the darwin awards section of the website, featuring weekly updates on how people manage to die despite the rigorous safety standards. It's a lovely mix of the hilarious, the sad and the gory. Here's some of the highlights:
Worker was engulfed in corn.

Worker shooting squirrels was killed when hit by a falling limb.

Two workers were in the process of performing arc welding on a oil tank that contained 85 barrels of crude oil. The tank exploded. The workers were blown up to 60 feet from the pad of the oil tank, receiving fatal burns.

Police officer was finishing his shift when an individual walked up to him in his personal vehicle. The individual reached for the officer's service revolver and fired three shots at him, striking him in the head.

Working was using a lawn mower, it flipped over pinning him beneath the water, and worker drowned.

Worker was found on the floor with a mask on, connected to two hoses, one for air and the other for nitrogen.

Worker was performing weed abatement using an all-terrain vehicle and was later found on his back with the vehicle across his chest.

Worker died when his head was impaled by metal from the drive section of a Ferris wheel. The employee slipped after acknowledging he was clear and the wheel began to turn, trapping his head.
Weekly Log of Deaths Occurring on OSHA sites Collection of the most interesting case studies
Two workers were in the process of performing arc welding on a oil tank that contained 85 barrels of crude oil.
Fuck the other ones, this one is hilarious.
My all-time favourite is "engulfed in corn".
Worker was engulfed in corn.
Gentlemen... behold! Corn!
Fuck the other ones, this one is hilarious.
Reminds me of a case for a garbage truck worker my mother heard when she worked as a paralegal. The worker ran out of gas when he was doing his route. His truck displayed the gas take as empty and knew it was broke, so he decided to check in the gas tank, only to find he needed a flashlight. He used a lighter. He lived and tried to sue Waste Management for his med bill +10k Another odd one my mother heard of. is when a worker decided to stop a garbage truck with his hands when it was rolling down the hill and he forgot to put it in parking.
Giving each other rides in the diggers when they should be working.
I can actually see this happening.
I fucking burst out laughing at the third picture and the caption great thread
Gentlemen... behold! Corn!
Lol, Dr.Weird quotes.

I know what osha is since I am in a construction trade school. The company was made to reduce workplace accidents by upholding proper safety procedures. Of course, now that almost nobody gets killed in the ways they used to, it's like these morons are finding new ways to kill themselves.

Pretty sure they don't follow OSHA guidelines in the mines of Moria though.

How the hell was the worker engulfed in corn.
I assumed a grain silo collapsed or something.
SO. MUCH. CORN DEATHS. Seriously, that's a lot of death by corn.
Two employees were welding brackets onto an oil storage tank (55,000 gallons). The tank, half full, contained explosive atmospheres of vapor from waste chemical and oil materials from automobile and truck service stations. One worker was killed and another injured when the tank exploded and the top was blown off.
SURF'S UP
Worker was retrieving golf balls and drowned.
Oh god, I cracked up.

I laughed when the guy missed with his hammer and the nail somehow rebounded and punctured his eye. A couple of them made me cringe a bit though.
Employee was suspended to the worksite in a harness made of lightweight chain on the end of a crane load line. During the operation the load line separated from a revolving drum due to improper crane operation. The victim was dropped into approximately 40 feet of water and was drowned. The supervisor in charge at time of the accident was the designated competent person at the site.

designated competent person
:raise: Does this mean everyone else is allowed to be incompetent?
I laughed when the guy missed with his hammer and the nail somehow rebounded and punctured his eye.
I had that happen to me once, luckily I was wearing safety goggles at the time. Which, probably is the point of that clip.
My heart goes out to you then. Now I feel like a bad person for laughing at that.
