Syrian security forces have surrounded the coastal city of Baniyas, activists say, days after tanks and troops took control of Deraa in the south.Soldiers have blocked the northern and southern entrances to the city, and the government has armed its supporters in nearby villages, the activists say.
The number of arrests around the country has risen to 1,000, they add.
The International Red Cross has appealed for access to the injured and arrested, especially in Deraa.
Rights groups say 560 people have been killed across the country in protests against the repressive rule of President Bashar al-Assad.
The government's position is still that the demonstrators are militant criminals and not - as evidence from the ground suggests - ordinary civilians calling for political reform.
The interior ministry set a deadline of 15 May for protestors who had committed "unlawful acts" to give themselves up.
I bet the casualties are higher than this says. I think I read something saying that they were over 10k.
Things can only get worse.
God dammit!
Well once we are done with Gaddafi we'll go to help these folks, right? right?

And get involved in a fourth war? What do you think we are, COMMUNIST?!?
I don't think Syria's rebellion will be able to win. The government cracked down quickly and hard.

Sadly, this seems to be the case.
I don't think Syria's rebellion will be able to win. The government cracked down quickly and hard.
Yep, much too fast. They must've been shit scared of the events in Libya, and thus didn't want to leave even the slightest opportunity for a resistance to form.

Probably didn't want to make a window where western powers could get involved.
Probably didn't want to make a window where western powers could get involved.
Or Israel. For them, seeing the airstrikes in Libya must be like a footballer watching another footballer on TV get kicked in the nuts, for lack of a better metaphor.
I thought everyone wanted America to stop being the world police?
It's kinda sad that there can be governments that can openly do these these things to its own citizens, and there's not much people can do about it.
I heard the US was strongly condemning what was happening and working on sanctions through the UN, but how much more can go on before we can't ignore it?
I thought everyone wanted America to stop being the world police?
America doesn't need to get involved here. If it comes to a conflict, which I'm almost certain it will not, then the rest of NATO can handle it well enough.
To get back on topic I think if any random Nato country decides to invade Syria, america will get jealous and take over the operation swiftly.
Just like how happened with Libya. Some brits and americans here even argued who was in charge of the operation from the start, ironically it was the french but america took over in a couple of days :v:

the US sees no value in them so no, plus Syria has a somewhat formidable army that the US doesn't wanna go against for such a small amount
it's never been about the people if you haven't figured it out yet
