(CNN) -- In swaths of Syria now controlled by ISIS, children can no longer study math or social studies. Sports are out of the question. And students will be banned from learning about elections and democracy.
Instead, they'll be subjected to the teachings of the radical Islamist group. And any teacher who dares to break the rules "will be punished."
ISIS revealed its new educational demands in fliers posted on billboards and on street poles. The Sunni militant group has captured a slew of Syrian and Iraqi cities in recent months as it tries to establish a caliphate, or Islamic state, spanning Sunni parts of both countries.
In the letter, ISIS said alternative courses will be added.

Major problems in the fight against ISIS
It also said teachers must erase the phrase Syrian Arab Republic -- the official name of Syria -- and replace it with Islamic State, which is what ISIS calls itself.
Educators cannot teach nationalistic and ethnic ideology and must instead teach "the belonging to Islam ... and to denounce infidelity and infidels."
Books cannot include any reference to evolution. And teachers must say that the laws of physics and chemistry "are due to Allah's rules and laws."
The letter ends with a firm warning:
"This is an obligatory announcement, and all violators will be punished."
Good luck running a country without math
Good luck running a country without math
They're clearly not in it for the long run
I can understand social sciences and whatnot from a radical view but what's wrong with math? They're nailing their coffin even tighter. Without proper education, whatever "state" that survives the impending NATO-gang-bang will be so far behind the times that it will be impossible to compete economically and technologically with others in the region.
Good luck running a country without math
implying they make rational decisions anyway
Good luck running a country without math
How are they going to count all that money the make.
They are really trying to bring about a new dark age of man, it's incredible.
With the grace of god, join us and live in the stone age!
You can kill and rape whoever you like as long as you mention god in every sentence and don't shave.
god is great
Even the so-called dark ages were a fucking renaissance compared to this bullshit
I mean, their biggest potential economy -oil- is pretty much dependent on math to do right and safely. Good luck drilling for oil without understanding anything about engineering or math. Good luck importing educated workers to do that shit for you.
Funny that they're banning math since Muslims practically invented modern mathematics as we know them. I wonder what NK thinks of ISIS
Also since sports are going to be banned good luck fighting a holy war with out of shape soldiers
Why would they ban math? It uses Arabic numbers and it's useful for pretty much everything.
Dude they have god, what else do they need
So far God is batting 0 for deflecting laser guided munitions, which use math.
Does this mean when they go to the market, and the guy running his stall asks Jihad Jerry how much of something he wants, that he'll get beheaded?
holy shit way to throw themselves back into the stone age.
NATO has no need to go in and fuck these guys in the ass, they'll destroy themselves in no time.
I can understand them wanting to ban social studies, maybe even sports. But I think math is fairly important to learn, especially in physics and chemistry, which I'm assuming they're still allowing since the article mentions that the letter states:
[T]eachers must say that the laws of physics and chemistry "are due to Allah's rules and laws."
Pretty sure math is a big part of physics and chemistry, which I'd imagine are important to know if building bombs.

Is it even possible to do physics and chem without math?

You mean to say that one of the most violent groups in the world isn't going to be producing football fans?
I find this difficult to believe.
I find it hilarious a militia using high grade weaponry is going to ignore math.
They're going to blow themselves up lol

Well at least coalition soldiers won't have to worry about accurate mortar strikes unless they have guys that are really good at eyeballing it
Of course they would. This is the only way they can stay in power by keeping people in the dark. Once people become educated they question shit like this.
I wonder if that is just generally true or of the leaders kids / upper echelons of ISIS' kids will receive a western education so that they can lead the ignorant masses.
If ISIS leaders live in the way they demand others do with these fliers - I bet we can simply wait it out and ISIS will crumble in on itself.
Dude they have god, what else do they need
I seriously doubt it's about god anymore. It's probably the excuse whoever organized all this use but I doubt they believe in it themselves.
It looks to me like they're trying and cause as much destruction and evil as possible before their imminent destruction.
"Muhammad, how many soldiers are headed our way?"
"A lot!"
"Really a lot or kind of a lot?"
"Like super a lot."
"Well, I'd say we have a lot of soldiers too, so we'll be fine. How far away are they?"
"A sorta big distance that way. I'd say we have about a little while until they arrive."
How the fuck can you ban math.
The reason to ban math is as obvious as 2+2=22!
Or maybe they saw this and took it seriously.

Finally something I can get behind! I hate maths.
Good luck trying to run a country, or even an army without maths and sports though...
Maths? That thing that the Islamic world was fucking brilliant at in the 9th to 15th centuries? The thing that makes the difference between either a functional bomb or 4 less limbs? Yeah, go ahead and ban it, see how far you get.

Even in the days of prohibition in the Western world, politicians saw it as applying only to the masses and not themselves.
Safe to say the ISIS leadership realises they need to keep an intellectual edge to successfully manipulate their followers, make them more ignorant and easy to control.
They honestly seem like a Middle Eastern WBC with guns, bombs, and kill lots of people. But their fix on religion surely seems almost identical.

God will run the refinery for them.
"BUT THEY'RE DEVELOPING BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS AND WE SHOULD BOMB THEM"
Hah, they just banned math and by extension, science, they aren't developing shit.
you don't need science to make ebola blankets
How are they going to count all that money the make.
1 million Allahs... 1 millions and 1 Allahs... 1 million and 2 Allahs....
but... surely they must train, right? wouldn't that be a.... SPORT?!
DUN DUN DUN!
I think the ISIS leaders have been watching too much Stargate.
ISIS leaders = Goa'uld system lords.
Everyone else = repressed populace locked in an eternal dark age.
Science = "magic of the Gods".
Oh look the Tau'ri are coming...
