French firm EDF, which is financing most of the £18bn project in Somerset, approved its funding at a board meeting on Thursday. China General Nuclear Power Corporation is contributing a third of the money. Contracts were due to be signed by all the parties on Friday. But in a surprise move, the government said it was "only right" to review such a significant project and would make a decision by the autumn. The decision was described as "bewildering and bonkers" by the GMB union national secretary for energy Justin Bowden, who fear it could jeopardise 25,000 jobs. "After years of procrastination, what is required is decisive action not dithering and more delay," he said.
Bit of a fuckup to announce a last-minute delay to a huge £18bn project that has been 8 years in the planning, hours after the major investors have finally agreed to go ahead with it, and while you're trying to show the world that you're still open for business despite Brexit. The chancellor had also said just five days ago that the project will definitely go ahead.
I wonder if some secret objection has come up that they're not willing to tell us about and has screwed with everything. It looks like May's ministry is not going super well so far.

Bump with new information May had objections to Hinkley Point, says Cable
Theresa May had "objections" to a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point during the coalition, the then Business Secretary Sir Vince Cable has said. Lib Dem Sir Vince said the prime minister had worried about a "gung-ho" approach to Chinese investment in it. The government said nuclear energy was important but it would review plans and make a final decision in the autumn. French firm EDF, which is financing most of the £18m project, says it is "confident" the project would go ahead. 'Big deal' Sir Vince, who was business secretary from 2010-15 and a supporter of Hinkley, said Mrs May, who was home secretary during that period, had been "unhappy" about the government's approach to Chinese investment.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-36932027

I'll object to Hinkley Point on the basis of cost. Two 1.6GW reactors should not cost 18b pounds. There is something seriously wrong with the EPR for it to cost so much. I'm also curious why they chose a greenfield site and not and existing nuclear site.
Because if there's anything Britain needs less of right now it's foreign investors.
We should really be building our own reactors, but because the Tories are ideologically committed to never spending public money, even when it makes no fucking sense to, we have this complete rip off deal that will end up costing the average energy consumer (which is fucking everyone) more in the long run.
