They don't need a subscription model, since minecraft is as popular as fucking oxygen.

According to this thread all of Mojang's future games should be free because Notch is rich. I don't know why I try to have a reasonable discussion on FP anymore

Uh, no, you're actually not reading. No game should be pay2play anymore, we've had the rise of Free2Play games prove that this is irrelevant. Have a flat fee, or have a cosmetic item shop, but don't you dare try to say that server costs are high, considering that we've seen the costs of major companies spend to host MMOs, where in a lot of the cases, the server costs are probably the lowest cost to them.

While it is a beta, there is no way it will develop into such a game, especially since most MMOs are F2P now. Hell, Planetside 2 is F2P and look at how much production is put into that. A low cost purchase like Minecraft is reasonable.

Every player in the game has a virtual processor and ship that are emulated in real-time even when the player is offline, which should explain why the game would require a monthly fee. Besides, we haven't even heard how much it will cost yet and you don't even have to pay the monthly fee if you don't want to play on the official server (you can still host your own or play on an unofficial server all you want).
