Ok so heres my problem. I am attempting to fix a laptop for a friend. He broke the operating system by watching too many "videos" from the internet if u get what i mean. And so i put in the dell disc containing the computers default operating system, Windows Vista. I reinstalled, with some trouble, a couple of blue screens and other mishaps that may have been my fault. So i started it over, formatted the hard disc, and ran the install without any problems.
So i boot into the OS and start doing the usual, installing updates, installing Firefox, etc. And so then it randomly freezes. Completely and totally. Cant use control-alt-delete, cant tap power button to make it shut down, mouse doesn't move, keyboard doesn't move, it is unresponsive, and so i have to resort to holding down the power button for the usual ten seconds or so. So i started it back up and another attempt at using it, it froze with no programs running at all. Just sitting at the desktop. It did not freeze immediately after log-on either. It took a while. How long exactly im not sure. After a few more attempts at running updates, mostly successful, i ran it yesterday just sitting at the desktop, and doing a little facebooking. No freezes. Can someone tell me what might be wrong? I figured that maybe the operating system is not a good one for this computer (dell inspiron 1545). Im wondering if installing windows 7/xp might fix this problem? Please give any suggestions as to what is wrong!!
NOTE: Windows vista is what the computer was manufactured to run. Or at least it has the Windows Vista sticker on it.
Most likely a virus, install Windows 7 would be better as it is more secure

If you did reinstall the entire OS correctly, then it seems your answer is most likely a Hardware or Memory error. Make sure you have wiped the Hard Drive before installing (just to make sure the hdd is clean) then if the problem persists, run a few Hardware tests, and I reccomend [url=http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/]UBCD[/url] As the Hardware tester, and [url=http://www.memtest.org/]Memtest86+[/url] as the memory test.
Both have very helpful instruction manuals if you have questions.
On a side note (not trying to be an ass here) try the tech support sections for a faster response next time.

he's using 7 you dolt. And I think he was saying he should disregard your answer because it makes no sense for a fresh install to have viruses.
GamingField, I'm thinking that its probably hardware error or some system quirks. When I built my system and installed windows 7 whenever I plugged in a new usb device it would freeze when it tried finding drivers for the devices, after a while it simply just stopped freezing. My point being a fresh install does not mean a bug free install. Id give it some time and see, it could just iron itself out. Also tell your friend to stop downloading all the virus ridden porn. :doh:
Do you have any memory devices attached to the computer? There are viruses that automatically infect devices attached to the computer so that when you reformat with the device still attached it instantly infects the system again.
So many situations where someone brings in a pc to be reformatted and they go home and plugin their shitty point and shoot camera's sd card and have to spend more money reformatting again and again.
