Doesn't deserve it.
including Electronic Art's Portal 2
Wow, all that for a beta! That's how you know the workers at Mojang are going to be billionaires
EA published it for consoles
I remember when I first played Minecraft. I honestly did not expect it to get this far.
Really? I mean, I LOVE minecraft, but if that's From Dust on that panel, it means that there were better nominees. Just because Minecraft is still hyped doesn't mean it's better (artistically) that other games.
I remember when I first played Minecraft. I honestly did not expect it to get this far.
Good ol' days of Survival Test and Pre-Glass Creative.
Electronic Art's Portal 2
my rage, take it all.
Good ol' days of Survival Test and Pre-Glass Creative.
Oh god I remember back when there wasn't multiplayer. We had a huge Facepunch save and someone spawned a shit load of those mobs under the FP in the city. :v:
I remember seeing a TV quality ad for Minecraft ad some some weird mobile gaming thingy with that one lady from The Daily Show. It's really weird seeing how mainstream Minecraft has become when you played it back when there were only 4 blocks and a crappy looking tree.
What is the award even for?
what
I fear the day for when video games are awarded exclusively for how much hype they get.
Minecraft was good because it showed that games don't have to be highly realistic to be fun.
Uhh... What?
Electronic Arts distributes the retail version for PS3 I believe.
I've never even heard of this award so I don't think it's anything significant. It's probably just some community event organized by the local government.
Minecraft was good because it showed that games don't have to be highly realistic to be fun.
I don't think that was ever the case.
How artistic Minecraft really is, depends on the person who plays it.
Minecraft was good because it showed that games don't have to be highly realistic to be fun.
To be fair i've yet to see a game yet that can be called Highly Realistic, and don't say any of the FPS's because no they aren't.
Doesn't deserve it.
You make a better game with java then...
It all boils down to what you consider art to be, in my opinion. Take Dwarf Fortress, which most would argue looks hideous. Sure it does, but isn't there artistic merit in the way that it simulates beings down to individual fingers, toes and teeth, yet can also create worlds with complex histories of conflicts, nations and megabeasts? I think that there is a great deal of art in procedural generation of a whole world with a unique history. Minecraft's good, I've had it since alpha, but I have to say that "most artistic" is totally down to opinion, it's not really something that can be pronounced by a single person. Also, it is overhyped in my eyes. (though still fun)
You make a better game with java then...
I hate that argument. Do you criticise your government? Let's see you manage that better. Criticise your school / work? Let's see you do better. Criticise games developers? Let's see you make a better game. See, it just doesn't work. We can criticise something, even if we can't do it ourselves. It implies that only someone with the relevant skills can criticise. I am not the best cook, but I can tell if something's burned, why shouldn't I say it due to me not being able to do better?
I played alot of Minecraft back in Alpha and I loved it, But it just lost its touch to me, It doesn't deserve this award, It's a good game but Portal 2 was way better.

Not for being the best piece of work in the field of procedural gneration, but because it showed that procedural generation can strike a special cord with the masses. That games that allow and promote creativity are still something that attracts a lot of people. But technically that's all from a game design perspective. "Most artistic" is a bit of a stretch.
Don't think this award carries any significance, I've just come back from it. Its just a local games festival that aims to be big!
To be fair i've yet to see a game yet that can be called Highly Realistic, and don't say any of the FPS's because no they aren't.
In terms of simulating an environment realistically we're getting pretty close. Sure, we aren't actually bouncing photons off atoms to calculate indirect lighting, but we have made major improvements in the last few years to get very similar results. Things like global illumination, volumetric lighting, and ambient occlusion all help mimic the actual look of light. Optimizations like parallax mapping and deferred shading allow us to provide more detail in the world with a minimal amount of additional detail. It'll be a really long time before we can upload data as atoms to the graphics card and have light simulated with raytracing, but that doesn't mean that a game can't use effects that provide very similar results without nearly as much work. We're getting to the point where we can make things that look pretty realistic at a glance, but we can still tell it's a game by examining the finer details. [editline]29th October 2011[/editline]
You make a better game with java then...
Back in 1995 Java was slow. Their VM is pretty optimized now, and it's possible to write a really good game in any language at this point. Most of the time-sensitive code is just calls to OpenGL which is written in C, and JNI overhead is minimal.
gravel best texture of any game out there
Electronic Art's Portal 2
Really. On topic, I'm not certain Minecraft entirely deserves this award.
Minecraft's default texture are really, really ugly.
Does this mean if I make a game that's just Microsoft Paint with background music I can get an award
