Quartz sometimes has gold in it, smash it up.
When I was a little kid I used to smash small rocks with bigger ones. A piece of quartz shattered and I had to go to the hospital to get it out of my eye.
So definitely don't wear goggles.
I can't break it, it's really really tough.
Get something made of iron. I believe, if it's quartz, your fingernail is harder.
