I'm planning to build a dedi box to host two Gmod servers, and I would like to know what parts this box would need/what the price would be. I'm really not sure how demanding a Gmod server is, so that's why I'm turning to you guys. I don't have a specific budget since I have no idea of how much a server like that costs, but I'd like one as cheap as possible. Under 1000$ sounds reasonable to me. That doesn't mean you should make one for 999$ just like that. The cheaper, the better =) Thanks.
If it's going to be hosted at a datacenter, you might aswell just rent a prebuilt one. Otherwise post a speed test, as I know everyone will ask for this.
My internet connection is 10 mbit upload and download and should be more than enough for a couple of gmod servers. Renting prebuilt ones seems kind of expensive, 100-200 dollars a month. If I buy my own server I will save hundreds of dollars every month 10 or so months.
Alright, it's just that most game servers or clans dies off after some time, and $1k would maybe end as a waste? Doesn't matter, your decision. I'll take a look at it in 10 minutes time when I've got a break, so that my teacher don't sneak up on me.
If it does die off I could just insert a graphics card and use it as a regular computer I suppose :) But I doubt it would die off soon, I got a brand new gamemode in store for it. And thanks for the help :)
So let me get this straight. You want a powerful PC to use as a server, that you can use for gaming if things go wrong. right?
Well yes, with a few upgrades like a graphics card. But this is just a back-up plan, you shouldn't worry too much about it. In other words, no need to buy graphics card and shit like that right now. In case the server dies I can buy it then.
Meh It's just good to know, so people (including myself) know if they should go all dual xeon's or an i5.
Another thing, I don't need to buy an OS or a monitor.
One with at LEAST 20MBPS Internet connection.
One with at LEAST 20MBPS Internet connection.
Hurp durp have a tool.
One with at LEAST 20MBPS Internet connection.
20MBs is overkill. SRCDS doesn't rely on downwidth as much as upwidth.
One with at LEAST 20MBPS Internet connection.
Actually, a famous ZS community, Stoned Potatoes, has a server running on 10 mbps and runs fine with 20 or so people on it. I shouldn't need more than that.
Just use this; http://www.reece-eu.net/drekrates.php
That doesn't answer my question of how much a server like that is going to cost/what parts it will need :S Or does it? Have I missed something?
It's useful for calculating settings, and seeing what you'd be able to pull from your connection. It was also a reply to my above posts, talking about how much bandwidth a server takes. Edit: Sorry mate, gotta catch the train so can't make you an example build till I get home. :frown:
you are going to need a static IP and some good good upload 2mb+ which is going to set you back alot, if you want something cost effective just rent one. they have T3 connections and will do better.

Have I missed something?
Not sure if you have see the thread on the cluster rack servers I was building, but I can build each 1U node for around $250 (dual 3.6 GHZ Xeon, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, ASUS NCL-DS1, etc), if you know the right place to find parts at ridiculously low prices
you are going to need a static IP and some good good upload 2mb+ which is going to set you back alot, if you want something cost effective just rent one. they have T3 connections and will do better.
Static IP takes 30 seconds to set up, and if you would've read the thread you would see that I have a 10mbit upload connection.
Static IP takes 30 seconds to set up, and if you would've read the thread you would see that I have a 10mbit upload connection.
And how exactly are you planning to set up a static IP in 30 seconds when your ISP is constantly changing your IP server side?
And how exactly are you planning to set up a static IP in 30 seconds when your ISP is constantly changing your IP server side?
What are you talking about? Static IP is just a matter of changing some options in the control panel. I have a static IP right now, took me 30 seconds to set up. And I know for sure it really is a static IP since I could host a Garry's Mod server on this computer and people could connect to it. I tried it as a test to see if my internet speed was enough for a server, and it was. My specs just weren't, kept getting server spikes.
Static IP takes 30 seconds to set up, and if you would've read the thread you would see that I have a 10mbit upload connection.
you can't make a static IP, you can make your router re lease the IP with DyDNS, but you have to get it assigned. 10 is pretty good but is that a consistent upload or is it a "IT can be this high if traffic is low on the network" do you have a DSL line or are you on a feeded coax line
Every time I've done a speed test I've gotten between 9 and 10 mbit/s, the change is probably because of some apps I'm running like MicroTorrent and Steam.

Because that is a Private IP address you can't access the internet with them, you need a public IP addres, you are just telling your DHCP "hey assign me this local IP address" [editline]12:58PM[/editline] Looks like the up/down is good now you just need to make sure the ports are not blocked by your ISP
http://portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm I pretty much did what they did in this guide. Static or not, people can connect to my Gmod server, and that should be enough.
yes that is your local IP address from your router/DHCP. Which means your PC has that address so the router can send the data to you. www.whatismyip.com will show you your public IP address, you need to make sure that has a permanate lease. type in your routers IP and see the lease times for each, IP adress
Your IP Address Is: 213.100.231.90 From whatsmyip.
Okay now you need to check the lease time on it, most are 24hr's call your ISP, sometimes unplugging your router for 5 minutes will release it but not always
Could you explain to me what lease time is? :S
What are you talking about? Static IP is just a matter of changing some options in the control panel.
Unless your internet service bundle have specifically mentioned that you will get a static IP for the service that you are paying, your IP address WILL change periodically to a random one in the ISP's dynamic IP pool. You cannot stop it from happening clientside.
