The 58 entries in the parade included bands, floats, and trucks decked out with lights. An unofficial entry was a half-dozen Occupy Victoria protesters, who followed the parade and handed out leaflets urging people not to support corporations at Christmas, but to donate to social service agencies. Anushka Nagji, an Occupy protester, had said earlier that the march would be peaceful and the group did not plan to chant or carry signs with profanity. The protesters were escorted by Victoria police officers walking on foot. There was also a small counter-protest, consisting of a couple carrying a placard reading "Get a life, get a job." The parade - which, police estimated, attracted 70,000 people - is a major fundraiser for the Mustard Seed food bank. Cash and food donations were collected from the thousands of people who lined the route up Government Street. --end relative part of article--
Source Occupy Victoria website (bias?)
Despite the shameful sensationalizing and fear-inducing media reports in the week leading up to Victoria’s Santa Claus Parade, participants in the People’s Assembly of Victoria were successful in their “Occupy the Santa Claus Parade” outreach event. About 10 PAOV participants, a small proportion of those still involved in the movement, were present to join onto the end of the lengthy light parade. The participants handed out candy-canes and oranges as well as leaflets with the holiday wish lists of local service providers. A positive message was relayed to the public that the People’s Assembly of Victoria is still working on changing the world, as they carried a banner stating, “A better world is coming, will you join us?” The participants were met with a heavy police presence and a lot of support from parade-watchers. The after-parade procession was applauded and thanked by the elderly, middle-aged, youth, and children. One mother of three shouted, “I want social justice too!” in response to a placard reading, “Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is social justice”. Several individuals also joined in, walking with the group to the end of the parade where families were enjoying PAOV’s two large pots of hot chocolate, candy canes, and mandarin oranges as well as getting a chance to put some faces to the wonderful and diverse individuals involved in the ‘Occupy’ Victoria movement. While participants tried their best not to disrupt the well-loved parade, the aggressive behaviour of the 20-or-so police escorts was alarming. The police walked alongside participants for the length of the parade engaging in intimidation tactics and selective enforcement. Parade-observers were allowed to walk in the streets while PAOV participants were shoved onto the sidewalk, where they were caught amongst families trying to pack up and head home. However, in spite of the intimidation and harassment by the police, PAOV participants remained calm and continued to hand out candy to happy children and leaflets to accepting parents. One participant was arrested, and held for an hour, after trying to walk along the street to give candy-canes to children lining the road.
Source
Barely related: Tonight I dreamt that I had gone on an expedition to the North Pole, so when I woke up the first 5 minutes of conscious state I thought I'd been to the North Pole. [editline]27th November 2011[/editline] I should really go on an Arctic expedition some day.
