I'm planning on upgrading my computer before I move out in the coming months and I'm going to ask for money on Christmas to put towards it. This is my current build: GPU: GTX 460 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P Processor: Core i5-750 Power supply: Antec EarthWatts 750 Monitors: Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP and a standard 19" 20GB Ram If I got a GTX 970 would I have need to upgrade my processor as well? Or is the 970 overkill for general gaming? Also, I was thinking about getting a SSD for my steam games too, any suggestions for that too?
20 GB of RAM? jesus christ why. The motherboard you have has a dead socket (LGA1156), no processors have been made for it for years. While you can still get CPUs for it, they're going to be more expensive than newer models since LGA1156 was a short lived socket. I'd recommend getting a new motherboard, CPU and video card. You can reuse everything else since it all should be compatible. You could also spend a bit extra to get parts to make a second system with the older i5-750 because it's still a good processor. The GTX 970 is a pretty heavy duty gaming card if that's what you're going for.
20 GB of RAM is because I had 4 GB and I bought 16 GB recently. Any tips on choosing a motherboard and processor? And I agree about GTX 970, what would be a good card to run most games at high settings on my 1920 x 1200 display? I also plan on playing the shit out of GTAV come January.
Entirely depends on what your budget is. If you're getting a 970 then your budget must be pretty high.
I not sure why I suggested a 970, its just the first one that popped in my head. A card I've been looking at is the 760, I'm not sure if its still overkill though. $600 - $700 should be good budget
If you want to reuse your existing parts, maybe something like this: GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127744 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130771 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117372 I know it's Newegg, but it's easiest to find stuff on it (for me anyway.)
That looks great, thanks! Newegg is good since I'll be probably ordering from there anyways (Just got to switch it too the Canadian site) I should also get a CPU cooler right? Would any of them be fine?
I would get an aftermarket cooler, stock Intel coolers are shit. If you don't plan on overclocking, a Zalman CNPS5X would work fine. If you do plan on overclocking, a Hyper 212+/Evo.
Thanks a lot for your help man, I really appreciate it
