From some research, the university runs PeopleSoft (Oracle junk) on Windows. They were basically asking someone to steal their SSNs. You couldn't design a more insecure system unless you threw in some Adobe software too. Unfortunately the college I'm going to runs PeopleSoft as well, so I'm fucked.

It used to get your driving license to open a bank account to get a job. The lis goes on. Also you can you apply for a new SSN, in the event its lost making the old one uselss. When you changed your last name you have to get a new SSN as far as I'm aware.
