• Possible film career?

So I am starting my freshman year of college and I have been thinking more and more about what I want to do for a career. I am very interested in movies (have a giant collection and love watching movies), and know a lot about video games (Constantly play them). Those are my 2 main things I am interested in. I have had a couple ideas for a career consisting of either a film editor or a producer. Although I am not the type of person to have the strongest imagination to make stuff from scratch so being a director is out of the question. I want to keep my options open for being able to work for film companies or even video game companies. I have also been fascinated with making the trailers for video games shown on television. I feel like working for a company like Microsoft or bungie would be a dream. I am the type of person to work better under a boss and having deadlines and goals, topics to create and have a set salary. Do any of you have any idea for a type of career in film or video game development that would be good or fit my description. As I read more and more online about available careers I get more confused about what I want to be. I want to do what I love but I dont want it be one where its a very low paying job. any help?
Maybe There's a lot of competition And the chances of you making it big are very low
Start out as a PA by finding some movie sets and volunteering. Or you can start out doing the equipment rentals/working at studios and meeting people. Once you learn the equipment you can start getting paid and going on set (200 dollar flat rate per day here in canada). From there I would try to rub shoulders with some guys in production or some gaffers and key grips until you make your way up. Good luck. [editline]12:06AM[/editline] Are you going to film school by the way?
Are you a very nit-picky person with an attention for details in already existing things who enjoys reading? If so you should consider script revisionist, I think it's called. Anyways they get scripts from studios/writers and read through them to make sure it makes sense and flows well. You get paid very well for it as well.
try and get as much experience as you can now, like maybe do volunteering or something or a work experience placement to get as much info as you can on future careers. the more experience you have the more appealing you will be to future employers as well. bear in mind though its incredibly competitive and it is quite unlikely to ever become truly famous/rich from it because of that
if you are musically talented and have good video skills, do what mysterguitarman did on youtube.
Well I am going to be to attending university of milwaukee and i will be in the peck school of the arts majoring in film. I am taking 3 beginning film classes my first semester and then i plan on looking into some game design classes my second semester. I am hoping these classes will give me an overview of available jobs and i would be able to narrow down possible careers and get a better understanding of what i want to do. Since acquiring a job in film sounds very hard and competitive I kinda am hoping I can find something more in video games such as being a person who helps develop the trailers for video games. Such as getting a job for bungie or a video game company like that. My plan is in college I will discover a career in film or video games that I like and then i would be able to apply for internships my sophomore year. Once i graduate i will have enough experience under my belt to apply for a game production company/ film company and leave Wisconsin and have a steady job doing something i love...If only it was that easy.

Video Games meke a LOT more money and is much less competitive, so you'd be better off going into that industry. (For those who think Video Games don't make more money, Modern Warfare 2 alone has raked in more money than Avatar, the top-grossing movie of all-time. Modern Warfare 2 is not the best-selling game of all-time either, that title is held by World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. With 11 million subscribers, they make over 2.1 billion dollars a year from subscriptions and in Asia, many players pay by the hour to play games.)
You could try looking at 3D modelling, I believe they make some trailers (for videogames) in programs like Maya.

Work your ass off, all I can tell you.
Do media studies at school, and whatever you dont flunk your normal subjects, you need them to get into a good Film School where you can learn there.
If you have good connections, you can get far.
